Hi, I'm wondering if there's a way to query my venstar thermostat for it's current setpoint temperature, and automatically set it to a certain number of degrees lower, using an insteon remote. I find myself sometimes being overheated at night and it would be nice to be able to press one button and know the heat will turn off, but not be disabled completely (otherwise I end up being too cold later). Does this make sense? Thanks in advance, Frank

When you say "average", do you literally mean it does a mathematical average between the two sensor? Would it be possible to just make it follow the remote temperature sensor? The reason I'm doing this is I want the temperature upstairs (my bedroom) to be set precisely at a certain temperature, as I don't sleep well otherwise. I don't really care about the downstairs temp being so precise, so if there was a way to disable it and have it obey the upstairs, that would work I guess. Also, will insteon and more specifically the isy still work with the remote sense? Thanks! Frank

Hi, So I had a venstar thermostat with the newest insteon adapter, and it was working perfectly. Now I've ordered a second thermostat which I plan to install upstairs using a 24v transformer for power, but it won't be hooked to a furnace at all. I had gotten some previous advice here indicating that it would work to create a program somehow to have the non-connected thermostat control the connected thermostat through programming, but I started thinking about it and I wasn't sure how one would accomplish this. Is this easy and I'm just missing something? What I want to do is have the heat come on in the house (only one furnace) when the thermostat upstairs gets to the set point I've determined, by somehow communicating this to the downstairs thermostat. Does this seem possible? Thanks, Frank

Meant to follow up but got carried away with the project. Everything works perfectly now. Thanks Rand! Frank

Thanks for the answer Rand -- sounds like I may be guilty of not reading the manual, although I did scour these forums. I get confused by what I need to do with the isy vs what I need to do for normal insteon. I'll give that a try and see if it works. Thanks! Frank

Hi, I have a new venstar thermostat with a V2 insteon adapter that’s not communicating the current temperature or setpoint back to the isy. I can successfully change the setpoint from the isy, but unless I use the query feature, the data displayed in the isy is incorrect. I do have an access point within a few feet of the thermostat, so I don’t think that’s the problem, and I have the newest official revision of the isy firmware (can’t remember what that is offhand). I’m not having any other communication issues at the moment, so I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong, or if maybe I got a bum unit (I just bought it and it’s never worked right). Any ideas? Thanks, Frank

The issue I have is that my existing thermostat is downstairs and I want to add an additional thermostat upstairs. My house is over 100 years old, so extending those wires upstairs will require an electrician running a snake in the wall, cutting up the plaster walls, etc. If I can just pull power from a nearby outlet I can do it myself and minimize additional wiring and holes.

Hi Guys, I've read quite a bit about thermostats in these forums, but I’m still unclear on this question I have – is it possible to operate a venstar dual-thermostat configuration where one thermostat is hooked up to the HVAC system, and the other one is just hooked to power, but is used to control the other thermostat? If so, how would I power the second thermostat? Thanks! Frank

Hi, I've got an HTC EVO and would be very interested in such an app. I'm actually a software quality assurance engineer by trade, so let me know if you need some assistance on the testing front. Good luck! Frank

Ok, I think I figured out what the problem is. It seems to be related to Java versions, because when I tried on another computer it worked fine. I was able to upgrade the isy firmware, and then the problem went away, so I assume enhancements were made to better deal with the newer Java version. Anyway, thanks for the help! Frank

I just tried removing all devices from the network but the isy and my computer, and put the isy in the dmz...still not working. Am I wrong in thinking something might be broken? I would try and reset the isy to factory defaults, but I can't even back anything up in the current state. Any more suggestions? Thanks, Frank

I do have it going through a switch, but I tried plugging directly into my router as well (linksys wrt54g) and it didn't help.

I've never noticed the error light blinking, but I've never paid attention. The mem light blinks sometimes when I turn lights on or off, but I'm not sure about other times. Could this be caused due to a problem with the plm module?

Hi Rand, I was able to save programs, etc, but I'm no longer able to do much due to this issue. I don't have firewall software running on my pc, just my router. Are there ports I need to forward on my router to use the ISY on the local network? THanks, Frank

Hi, My isy-99i seems to be having some communication issues. Devices in the house are basically working, although sometimes unresponsive, but I'm seeing some strange behavior when I bring up the administrative console. When I first enter my password, devices and scenes all show the proper icons, and I can get to all of the menus. Then, after about 5-10 seconds, all of the icons turn to exclamation points, and I can only get to the file menu. I'm running firmware version 2.7.6, and I can't upgrade, because I get a message saying that the ISY refused the the program update. Everything used to work fine, but I haven't logged into the admin console for a while, so I don't really know how long this has been happening, or what could have changed. Like I said, devices have been acting non-responsive sometimes, but I don't know why. I've tried rebooting but that doesn't seem to help. Thanks.
