If it’s possible to run Docker on eisy then you could run Home Assistant that way. But running Home Assistant in a Docker container is limited in that you can’t use any Home Assistant Add-Ons, which is where the real power of Home Assistant lies. This is the exact reason I now run the the full Home Assistant OS on a Raspberry Pi instead of running the limited version of Home Assistant in a Docker container on my Synology NAS.

I’ve pretty much decided against adding any new Insteon hardware at this point and am mostly using my ISY994i/IR PRO to feed data into Home Assistant, which I have configured on an 8gb Pi. Is there even a reason for me to move to an eisy? The fact that I’d need to do USB to serial to RJ45 to use my PLM is a bit of a bummer.

I never suggested anyone should rip out their entire installation. I’m not doing that myself. The Insteon devices I have sold are unused devices that I never got around to installing. In the past 18 months, when I have had an opportunity/need to replace a device, I have gone with Lutron over Insteon. So to use your rather poor analogy, I would buy a new Samsung microwave because it uses current tech rather hoping kitchenaid decides to grace us with a replacement microwave. IMHO you’re thinking too small - we should be looking for a viable alternative to INSTEON not just one or two of their devices. I have begun selling my Insteon devices and transitioning to Lutron. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hi all. I recently installed a couple of the new Nest Cams in my backyard. They work fine and have a very nice image, but like any consumer grade security camera, their night vision leaves a bit to be desired. Over the weekend I discovered quite advertently that the quality of the nighttime image on my Google Nest Cams is significantly improved if my patio string lights are on. For that reason, I am looking for a way to trigger the patio lights when there is motion in the yard (the patio lights operate on an Insteon Outdoor On/Off module with a Keypad as a controller). I figure my options are: 1) Mount Insteon motion sensors near my Nest Cams and have them trigger the patio lights. My concern with this option is the negative reviews of the Motion Sensor II, as well as the fact that it’s technically rated for indoor use only. 2) Is there a better motion sensor that operates on a different protocol that I could integrate into my ISY 994 or possibly a Polisy (if I were to get one)? 3) Is anyone aware of a way to use Google Home notifications linked with IFTTT to trigger ISY programs? Thanks for any input. I’ve been an Insteon and ISY user for 15 years but i have been mostly out of the game lately.

I recently swapped out my home router for a BOX 2 from Bitdefender (I have been using Bitdefender's antivirus software for several years and have been very happy with it). In addition to performing traditional routing functions, BOX monitors all traffic flowing in and out of the network to make sure nothing nefarious is happening, and automatically blocks anything concerning (this is especially helpful with teenagers in the house). In addition to scanning all network traffic BOX also identifies the IoT devices on your network and then scans them for vulnerabilities. After scanning the 50+ IoT devices on my network BOX identified exactly one device that currently has a vulnerability: My ISY 994i/IR PRO (currently on version 4.7.3). Here is the notification BOX gave me: ******************************************************************** Risk Vulnerability High Insecure authentication procedure detected on ISY Home Automation Details INFO ISY Home Automation/http protocol accepts unencrypted (plain text) logins. WHAT CAN I DO Make sure that your device or service is up to date. This vulnerability should be fixed by the software provider with an update. ******************************************************************** Is it true that ISY accepts plain text logins, and if so, are there plans to correct this?

I am hoping to get some help with an issue that has developed pretty recently. First, by way of background, I have been using Insteon and the ISY for well over a decade now. I have many wired and plug-in devices, most of which have been upgraded to dual-band devices (when available). I also have a SignalLinc wired near by breaker box, and I have about four of the newer access points. I have also upgraded my ISY to a 994i/IR Pro. About six months ago my PLM began failing and was replaced with a new device. My backups had been corrupted by the failing PLM so I ended up resetting everything and basically starting from scratch. Translation: I have the equivalent of a pretty new set up with a few older, non-dual-band devices sprinkled in. A few months ago (unfortunately I cannot pinpoint a date) we began experiencing occasional issues where it appeared that programs were triggering unexpected events. The most common one (happened six or seven times) would work like this: My wife would get home from work and park her vehicle in the garage. I have sensors on our garage doors with programs that monitor their open/closed status. The moment her garage door would close (triggering the "door closed" program) nearly every Insteon device in the house would turn on, and BOTH of our garage doors would open. Obviously, this isn't great for the reputation of what my family calls "the system." Again, this only happened six or seven times, not every day, but when it causes your garage doors to open unexpectedly, it really causes the system to take a hit in terms of reliability. I also have programs that turns off the lamps in the living room and the family room at 11:30 p.m. These programs were some of the first I ever wrote and they basically work every night without exception. Last night we were watching TV at 11:30 when the lights went off as expected but I heard an outletlinc on/off unexpectedly click in the next room. I got up to investigate and discovered that a number of devices not included in the "lamps off" programs had turned off, including the coach lights by the front door. And, of course, both garage doors had opened. I used to be way deeper into managing issues like this but the older I get the less patient I have for it. I am really hoping someone might be able to help me troubleshoot this. By the way, below is the log from the occurrence last night: I just tried to get info from the event viewer but I updated my ISY firmware this morning and it looks like the event viewer data was cleared. I did take a backup before updating so if anyone knows how to extract event data without restoring from the backup would be happy to do that. My understanding is that the delay in triggering a recipe in IFTTT can be up to 15 minutes due to polling intervals. This is actually the reason I stopped using IFTTT to trigger my Hue lights.
-
I changed my mind about using the bulb after reading this on the product page: With six or eight of these in a relatively quiet room, I don't want to test the effect the buzzing will have on my family's sanity. I will just go the SwitchLinc route out of the gate.
-
Thanks for the suggestions. I think I will buy one Insteon LED bulb for now and test it out. I'm sensitive to lighting, so I want to make sure the spectrum won't be annoying or strain my eyes. Failing that, I will probably go the SwitchLinc route.
-
Thanks to a nasty sewer backup into my first-floor family room (yuck!), my homeowner's insurance is paying for a long-overdue remodel of the room (yay!). I will be taking the opportunity to deploy my first new Insteon devices in at least five years. The 15x20 room currently has three can lights, and I am thinking of increasing that number to 6-8. The plan is to set this room up as a cozy family room that doubles as an entertainment center. For that reason, I would like to have granular control over the individual can lights so that I can have several different scenes depending on what the room is being used for. Is my only option to use an In-LineLinc Dimmer at each light, with the scenes controlled by a KPL? I'm not thrilled at the prospect of using a $55 inline device for each can light, but I want to do this right the first time without having to go back and do any retrofits later (the walls and ceiling are being completely gutted for the remodel). All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

I am on 3.3.8. I do not have (and have never had) any programs that control the backlight of any KPLs or switchlincs. The latest random triggering of lights occurred shortly after 11:00 p.m yesterday (1/14/2013). Here is a comparison of the Programs tab in ISY for that time period (sorted by Last Run Time) and my ISY log for the same time period. As you can see, there are WAY more program entries in the log file than there are in the Programs tab. In a recent development, I have suddenly begun having lights turn on at random. Even more strange is that the switches don't always correctly reflect the status (the switch is off but the light is on). The log shows these lights are being turned on by a program (I have no such program). Is it possible my PLM is biting the dust?

As I said, rolling my Java back to Version 6 fixed my problems. Unfortunately, I was forced to update again yesterday to access my work computer from home (using GoToMyPC). So now I'm back at Version 7 Update 5. I just tried accessing the ISY again, and while I do see the administrative console come up (which it it did not do before I downgraded and the re-upgraded), I get the following two error messages: Oh, and I did run a deep virus scan in Safe Mode using Norton 360, but did not come up with any infections. Malwarebytes also came up clean.
