That's good to know. I did do it with my iPhone. It is awesome...I have an echo or dot in almost every room now and I can just walk in and say "lights on" in any room. It's great!
-
I have 1st and 2nd gen echos and a bunch of different gen dots. If they are all on the same amazon account you shouldn't have to do anything. They will work with the skill. As I just learned on another forum post you might want to setup the group functionality so you can just assign “lights on” to a specific echo for a specific room. That’s done in the Alexa app.
-
Oh. I’m using an old skill. Man...you stop paying attention for a bit and the world changes. For the better even...awesome!
-
Alexa seems to keep detecting the type as “other” even though in the portal it says it’s a device/Light even if I delete the device and re add it. Anyone else seen this? I have messed with this for over a year so I’m probably behind on something...
-
Hmm. Ok all my lights are in there as “devices” so maybe I need to rediscover or something. I’ll play with it. Thanks for the info.
-
Ok that’s really cool. Do you have to name the lights something specific? I have an echo dot in my boys room and named it “boys room”. Their ceiling light is currently named “boys light”. When I put them both in a group and say “Alexa turn lights on” it doesn’t seem to work. Is there some sort of convention with naming I need to follow? If I say turn boys room on it does work...

It's been a little bit since I searched for this but is there yet a way to have an echo programmed to just say "Lights On" and it will know to turn the lights on specifically assigned to that echo? I know in the past you could create multiple accounts and yada yada but I'm wondering if there's a normal way to do it with just one account. I understood that Amazon at the time didn't expose a unique number/name to the echo so this couldn't be done. But I just read this by Jez Walter on "zones" where it seems he's doing this and it should be feasible for the ISY Portal? http://www.jezwalter.com/instructions.php ------------------- ZONES: Only send content if the question was heard from a specific device:This is also very easy to set up. Go to your ‘Settings’ page in the Alexa app and make a note of the name of each of your devices, drop these at the bottom of the connections.txt file with a prefix of ZONE: e.g. ZONE:Echo-1 ZONE:Echo-2Phrase:Main StreetNEWURL-62:http://www.council.org/trafficcams/mainstreet ZONE:Dot-1 ZONE:Dot-2 ZONE:Dot-3 Whatever phrases you add below each of these device names will only launch the URL’s if the question was actually heard from that specific device. Imagine, you have a Dot in your hall with a small monitor and possibly a Raspberry Pi driving it. You ask, ‘Alexa … What’s the traffic like on main street’ the Web extractor could then launch a website to an actual traffic camera onto that particular monitor whilst you’re putting your coat on. ------------------------

I'm on the Alexa developer list and it looks like they're at least going to add some more skills. I'm actually excited for this as it will fit well with what we do in our kitchen. Plus it has Ring integration to see the front door which is nice. From Amazon ----- Today, Amazon introduced Echo Show, a new device that brings you everything you love about Alexa, and now she can show you things. With Echo Show, customers can watch video flash briefings and YouTube, and see music lyrics, smart home cameras, photos, weather forecasts, to-do and shopping lists, and more. We are also excited to announce we are adding new capabilities to the Alexa Skills Kit that will enable you to optimize your skills for the screen and connect smart home cameras to Alexa. Mobilinc is the best. It's just pricey. If you don't mind the price get it. I wrote xcontrol which isn't perfect but what I use everyday. I like the quickness of it and it's less expensive. There are a couple others but I haven't used them for a long time.

Yea...my four yr old and 2 yr wake up and I hear them in the kitchen saying Alexa turn on the lights or play twinkle twinkle little star. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when they realize the dots in their rooms that plays Winnie the poo and row row your boat will control mom and dads lights... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have to say I really like these new dots for control. I have two sitting right next to each other and when I say "alexa" both turn blue rings on but then they do in fact recognize that only one needs to respond so it turns the other off. Which seems to be working very well even on the same table. They're a great size, look cool and seem to be working really well for control. They were also a piece of cake to setup 6 of them quickly with the new app. The combination of Alexa and the portal is really working well for me. Now if we could only get that uniqueID...

Course I suppose the NSA can be enthralled with my completely normal boring life with all these dots everywhere. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That's probably a fair question. In my case I don't talk to my phone much in the car cause it's a pain. My truck has SYNC so I use that a bit to make phone calls and such. I just find my hands are busy a lot doing stuff at home so it's way convenient to talk to it. Like when I'm doing dishes. Or in the theater room I'm too lazy to get out of my chair to adjust lighting or whatever and it's easier than pulling out my phone even. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oh man...not me...I have them everywhere now! When I'm feeding the baby or have kids crawling all over me or reading books to them it is WAY convenient to just tell my house to do whatever I want it to do or play music or tell a joke or get the weather or add a todo or check my calendar. Being able to do something with just voice is awesome when I've got spitup all over me or cleaning up a mess in the kitchen and I need that light on in the corner. My wife loves our echos and now that we have 6 more dots we're going to have almost complete coverage in our home. I have an all off button by the garage door and my wife doesn't use it any more because she just says "Alexa, turn home off" as she's walking out the door with her hands full. She loves it...which makes me love it even more!

Best AV control (IR and network) with Amazon Echo?
kgividen replied to kgividen's topic in Amazon Echo
Oh. And of course I have a TiVo too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Yea, I got that you can do it with separate Amazon accounts. But with 3 echos and 6 dots that's a lot of work and/or not possible to have that many accounts. As was stated earlier an uniqueID per device would eliminate the need for all the crazy.

I'm ready to control my AV setup with my Amazon Echo and I'm curious to know what is the best setup people have used. I know Barry Gordon has some sort of custom code on a raspberry pi and global caches but is that the best way or way others are doing it? I have 3 Echos (soon I'll have 6 more dots) 2 Vizio Smart Tvs in different locations (Both have Netflix, amazon tv, vudu, plex) Roku 3, Apple TV 2 Amazon Fire Sticks Rasberry Pi, Insteon Multiple Global Caches (although they aren't hooked up) Plex Server (currently on a windows server) I figure there are a few options here including: 1) Control IR through Insteon IR control and have ISY trigger it through Alexa and the portal 2) Control IR through Global Caches and use the network module with ISY (and possibly use something like Gordon uses to stack and or verify the GC commands?) 3) Control IR through Global Cache and have Echo talk to some sort of service on a PC/Raspberry Pi Are there other good options? Ideally, I'd like to say: "Alexa, turn on a movie" and it would dim my lights, turn on the tv, turn on some movie device (roku, appleTV, fireTV, netflix, amazon any of them would be nice...) "Alexa, turn on netflix" and it would dim my lights, turn on the tv and switch to netflix. Then unfortunately I might have to say "Alex, turn netflix up/down/left/right/enter/etc..." Or maybe Alexa can talk to my fire tvs and just say "Alexa, play tv show Gotham, or whatever?" I haven't tried this yet... Stuff like that...thoughts? Thanks! Kent

Doh...never mind...guess not...found this post on this: http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/19544-2-echo-dots-w-1-isy-in-2-rooms/

Just to clarify. Has anyone been able to use dots/Echos in say 8 separate rooms and just say lights on in each room and it will only turn the lights on in that specific room? Without using separate Amazon and portal accounts? Seems like the whole unique ID thing someone suggested would be needed for that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

FYI I was able to mix and match white and black. I got three of each the put the code in to get the discount. It was a little wonky but it worked. You could probably still cancel and do that if you wanted. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well I ordered the six pack and got one free. It really would be nice to just use one account and be able to say lights on in each room. I have three Echos and now six dots. Now I need to work on a good AV control now either with global cache or insteon/ir or something. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Good idea. I have some of that already and it won't affect the sound proofing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Has anyone hung a dot on the wall? I want to hang one in the back corner of my theater room where I have a plug but I don't want to put a shelf there. Is there a mounting hole or anything on them? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have seen something similar to this. In my case it was because I send a command to turn off or on and then I immediately queried and the ISY didn't have the correct status. I delayed a couple of seconds and then it would see the correct status. I'm also not sure if it doesn't have something to do with the ramp rate. I haven't looked into it past putting a small artificial delay there.

Well I'm also looking for iOS testers if anyone is interested.
