I have had success in linking a metal garage about 175 feet from my house (power from different power line transformers about 1/2 mile apart) by using Insteon outdoor switches mounted under the eaves. I also had an Insteon bulb in outdoor fixtures on each building. The Insteon devices had straight line of sight between the two systems.
