Wireless access point (range extender) recommendations?

If it happened to be DD-WRT compatible that would be a plus but not necessary.

Background.

Cable modem with wireless G/N built in and EMTA (voice over ip)

Rent that little bugger as owning one is not allowed in my area by the cable god company now.

The wireless is pretty good and extends 90% to where I need it.

That last 10% is way out in the yard and inside my metal sided shop.

Ideally, I want an access point I can just plug into the shop, point the antenna towards the one in the house and broadcast on the same SSID so the phones, tablets, pc's etc all just connect to it instead of the weaker one. I believe that is how a "mesh" network works for larger buildings. It seems hotels have different systems on each floor though..

If it were me I'd disable that built-in wifi and install a Ubiquiti WAP, perhaps their long range model. They are more enterprise-type products so you should have solid technical knowledge to install, but to be honest they're not overly difficult - just maybe not quite as easy as your typical Linksys/Netgear box. That might reach your shop acceptably, and if not perhaps install an exterior unit on your shop wall to boost the signal into your shop.

Good luck.

I will do some googling on that, what I have tried on the belkin/netgear/linksys does not work..

Would like to get away from renting Comcasts someday!

I bought a g/n basic module to give it a try, found one for $45.00, which is less than I will get when I take back this Belkin.
