icerabbit Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I added my first 3 way insteon circuit to the house the other day. It works fine by tapping either switch in person. Both on and off. Remotely via the ISY only one switch works. I can toggle either switch on or off, see the interface button go green and hear it click, but only the switch with the actual load wire will turn the lights on/off remotely. The switch with the capped load wire just clicks on/off and its leds turn on/off, but does physically nothing regarding turning lights/off. So I think I've got something wrong. The switches are controllers and responders to the scene basement 3way light circuit, as I thought per the instructions I found, but now can't seem to track down. Looking in admin console, I have the switches listed, a hidden scene for the 3way light circuit, a scene for all basement lights. Any pointers as to what documentation I used and what I actually should see in detail for each switch? Thanks,
LeeG Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Normal Insteon operation. To have both switches react from the ISY turn the ISY Scene that cross-linked the switches On/off. Sending On/Off commands to an individual Insteon device affects only that device. The device does not then control its Responder(s). To control all devices in a Scene the Scene must be controlled.
oberkc Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 The switches are controllers and responders to the scene basement 3way light circuit, as I thought per the instructions I found, but now can't seem to track down. In addition to the response by LeeG, I wanted to make sure you are using the correct "instructions". When using the ISY controller, follow the instructions on the wiki and ISY user manual, all available here: http://wiki.universal-devices.com/index ... =Main_Page Do not manually create scenes using the intructions provided with each insteon device. Always create scenes via the ISY admin panel.
icerabbit Posted April 25, 2013 Author Posted April 25, 2013 Thank you both. So, it is normal operation (maybe in the future it'll be more advanced ) I guess I could hide those switches from showing in web device list, using ~ Yes, I had used the ISY instructions. The primary reason I got the ISY was so I would have easier setup, more control, etc. But, it is a learning experience
LeeG Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Although most find this out by controlling an individual device rather than the Scene this is actually a positive capability of Insteon. There are occasions where control of an individual device is desirable, even when linked with other devices. If devices always turned into Controllers, propagating individual Direct commands on to linked Responders, it would not be possible to control that one device. With Insteon an individual device can be controlled and a group of devices can be controlled simply by choosing to send Direct commands to a device or Scene commands to the Scene.
oberkc Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 maybe in the future it'll be more advanced Adding my opinion to (and in agreement with) LeeG's, I don't consider this an "advancement". If a controller in one scene were also a responder in a second scene, there would be no way to turn on the second scene without the first also coming on. With insteon, and especially remote control, we should be thinking scenes, where possible. No...it is working as it should. Changing is as you suggest would, in my opinion, break the system.
deniz Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Hi, I’ve read the thread but somehow I think there should be an option of controlling it both manually and digitally depending upon the preference of the user. @oberkc I’m not sure what you mean by break the system. Yes, it might be a bit hectic but I think we can control an individual device or a group remotely. I’m sorry if I come up as a bit confused but I really thought there were options for all the possible scenarios by Insteon. I’d love some further input on this.pcb assembly prototype
