A watch out for AT&T Uverse users with many network devices

Just wanted to share my experience with others out there who use AT&T U-verse and have a lot of devices (including switches) on their network. I'm posting on this forum because I believe it could potentially impact ISY/INSTEON users.

 

For a number of years I was plagued with extremely slow and unreliable internal network traffic. Performance of my network dependent devices (ISY, SONOS) was impacted. In my troubleshooting, I thought perhaps it was related to faulty devices, too many switches, etc.

 

I'm now quite comfortable in assigning blame to AT&T Uverse when combined with my extensive network. I recently switched to COX without changing anything else and no longer have any network issues. Files transfer on my network at an order of magnitude faster rate. It seems the main difference is AT&T Uverse delivers television through your network to the set-top boxes, while a traditional cable provider such as Cox delivers via coax cables.

 

In the blog (link below), an individual who had similar-sounding issues describes how AT&T delivers its television via IP and that he resolved by setting up a virtual LAN (VLAN). That's too complicated for me and many others. My main purpose for this post was to alert people that Uverse (television) could potentially (not definitely) impact their network performance if they have a complex network.

Thanks for your input on this. The AT&T router has not been a top performer from our experience.
