Insteon Motor Control Part 2

I asked a few months ago for some help but I some but I wasn't quite sure how the project work. I'm back and need some help again. Last month, I posted a project in the Reddit DIY forum about how to hide a picture.

Now I want to add actuators and control the opening and closing of the frame. I think i've got most of the parts but I need help putting it all together. Here is what I have so far.

 

1. Two 18" 24V actuators

2. Two Insteon Micro Motor Controls

The actuators work by reversing polarity. I am a beginner with electronics, motors, etc so please explain it to me like I am 5. Can someone help me figure out what else I need to buy and how to wire them up?

That sales page leaves much to be desired.

Are you sure it is AC?

You can't reverse AC and make something reverse. Unless it has two inputs. One for each direction.

Web page also says. No limit switches. So you may have to have a way to stop them at full and retracted positions.

I just some some doubts about how would ISY controll the micro open/close module. I just see a ON and OFF commands to be used... I suppose that if I send an ON command, it will open.. and if I send an OFF command it will close. right?

 

How could I stop it in a partly openned position?

The mechanism will stop partly openned.. if I cut off the 120Vca to it.. but... wich command should be sent from ISY to do this? I just see the ON and OFF commands options...

 

I think the first thing you need to understand is that lots of answers depend upon how and what device you use and how its configured to operate.

 

If the micro is set to latching it will apply power the entire time it is on. This is great if the device you have knows when to stop and has a limit switch etc. It does not help if it doesn't and will over drive and burn out the motor.

 

Momentary, will apply power only when you click on the button or virtual button for what ever duration its set for in the micro module. This is great for something that doesn't have a limit switch etc. But does not help if the device is not fully extended or retracted.

 

You need to go back to your guy and find out some details about the gear and provide some spec's. Otherwise you will get the kind of replies from Stu who is being literal to your question at hand.

guedeslez, the Micro Module  is inappropriate for the actuators linked to at the beginning of the thread. But you have still not indicated those you have (one post) or are having built (a different post) or are imagining nor the intended purpose even though I've asked several times.

I'm sorry about the last questions where I wasn't clear enough... 

 

I'm installing some motorised courtains and searching for the approprieate Insteon device to control them and I realized that the micro open/close module was the best fit for it (or maybe not?).

 

An example of what I want to do: I want to send an ON command from the ISY and the courtains start opening, ok, and I want to send another command to make it stop. How could this be done?

In my tests, I send the ON command and it applied power for UP and when I send the OFF command it applied power for DOWN. How to stop it?

What you use depends on the motors/actuators for the window coverings which you still haven't specified. The Micro Open/Close is used to control a reversible motor, either fully open or fully closed. There is no in-between setting.

Stus..  I really don't know exactly the actuators because I'm buying from a reseller... I just know that they are controlled by two dry-contact signals... One to go up and other to go down.. The roller will stop if no one of the dry-contact is closed...

 

I bought some open/close modules thinking that I could send the roller up or down and stop it the time I want. I'm just finding that I couldn't do this with this device.. :( It's sad if I'm right....

Smartenit makes some plug in Insteon Modules with more than one relay. That could be used to switch Dry Contact Inputs. EZIO40 is one that comes to mind.

They are plug in and not wired where you can hide them in an electrical box.

 

I also don't know if all there features are completely handled by the iSY994i. I know that some features need you to use their Utility Suite to be set from default.

Dry contact is usually mention for low voltage. The Micro Modules are line voltage.

No problem with this. I'll make the micro module to close a relay and then close the roller dry-contact.

This is a good option but is more expensive than the micro modules. In this case I could use a global cache WF2CC iTach Module too... I know that its features could be handled by ISY through network devices configurations...
