Demo room using ISY 994i

Dear All,

 

I am preparing to work on a very interesting demo project that use ISY 994i/ IR Pro with the following functions:

 

Devices need to be controlled:

- 8 lighting circuit

- 1 DAIKIN FXDQ32PBVE air-con

- 1 indoor panel button with four buttons : DND ( Do not disturb), Door bell, Cleaning Room and Bathroom that allows it to control LED Display Status Panel outdoor.

- 1 key card switch to control some lighting.

 

Project Requirement:

- Smart Home design, using only 1 handy remote to control each light bulb, adjust temperature and DND and Make up room button integrated.

- When guest press DND button, a DND notification light up and mute the ringtone when someone ring the bell.

- When guest press Make up room button, a Make up room notification light up.

- When guest enter and insert key card into card holder, some light which is programmed will light up.

 

 

I am planning to use ISY 994i/ IR Pro with the following insteon devices

- 8 x Switchlinc on/of to control 8 lighting circuits.

- 1 x Insteon Thermostat or Nest Thermostat to control Daikin FXDQ32PBVE air-con

- 1 x KeypadLinc - 6 buttons to control four LED Status Display Panel Outdoors (DND, Doorbell, Cleaning Room, Bathroom).

- 1 Mini Remote or One Harmony Universal Device to control everything above remotely.

 

Since this kind of project is very new to me, i have a few questions and need your help.

 

- Can i use Harmony Universal Device Remote to control everything above including: switchlinc, keypadlinc, thermostat...?

- Which Harmony Remote can work with ISY 994i IR Pro. I found many products from this link: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/harmony-remotes. Which products are suitable for me: Harmony 650, Harmony 350 or Harmony 700...

- Could you recommend one Harmony remote for me?

- Can Insteon Thermostat or Nest Thermostat can control singe split air-con like Daikin?

You might consider the z-wave flavored ISY for t'stat control.

 

Reviews of the Insteon t'stat are mixed.

 

The Nest would require some kind of additional computing power (like a raspberry pi, for example), and some level of comfort with the tools of computer programming, ie github, the command line, etc.

 

I've spent a bit of time fussing with my ISY and my Nest, just to use REST statements to issue static commands. I'm slowly getting there. Anything more complex requires the above-noted additional computing capability. But the whole thing could break at any time if the Nest API changes. I wouldn't use it for client-targeted applications.

 

Perhaps that will change with the new firmware, or if UDI is able to offer a Nest module. But they just announced support for commercial energy management via the z-wave module (edit: or is it via Zigbee?). That's available right now, and it's officially supported (I believe, not trying to speak for UDI here).

 

The rest of it sounds doable. The remote issue kinda depends. I have not worked with the Harmony, but it seems like that would be best for "babysitter proof" installations. BUT that requires line-of-sight to the ISY. unfortunately, the LEDs on the front of the unit are pretty bright, and flicker with activity. Very distracting in an entertainment center. There are workarounds, just be aware of the issue. I like the Insteon remotes actually, but they do not offer interchangeable labels for those, so unless you're willing to make your own, you're stuck with the generic lettering

In some cases, I have become a fan of the harmony hub.  This would require no line of site between remote and ISY, so long as one of your hub blasters is pointed at the ISY.  Alternatively, I see no reason it could not be used to transmit IR commands to the ISY through an IRLinc.  It has been a while since I programmed the IRLinc, but I recall that it could learn pretty much any IR command and execute a program from that command as a trigger.  I think the IRLinc directly supports scenes, as well.

Other people can probably help you out better there. I'm using the Nest, and I actually am pretty happy with it overall. But it doesn't integrate well. I don't have any z-wave devices myself, but I know several people here do, and can probably speak from experience.

 

There are Zigbee t'stats too. Forgot to mention that. Again, I don't have any direct experience with them either, I only know what I've read.
