Wireless Open/Close Performance in Very Cold Weather

Featured Replies

Does anyone have experience with using wireless open/close device in very cold weather? I'm talking about -20C (-4F) or colder for weeks at a time.

Will the battery die fast? Will the device work?

I'm planning on using it on an unheated garage door (not an actual garage door, but a door that gives access to the garage)

Thanks for the help.

I've been using a Trigger Linc (Open / Close) sensor in my garage for almost 5-6 years in sub -45'C weather operating just fine.

I did however changed out the batteries to lithium type batteries as they operate better in the extreme cold.

NOTE: Smartlabs clearly indicates using them in this type of environment is out of range for their design and there is no guarantee it will operate long term or even at all.

Having said this, its worked fine for me in the cold north. You just can't throw stones at them if it fails to communicate, eats through batteries, or dies under the two year warranty period.

While not exactly what you're asking about, I've had an insteon motion sensor outside (protected from the rain & snow by the soffit) for 5+ winters with temps down to -20C and lower with no problems. I do put in a fresh lithium battery each fall. I haven't tried seeing if the battery would last through 2 winters. I want to avoid taking the chance of having to climb a ladder on an icy ground in the dead of winter.

Sounds good. I can live with changing batteries. I'll look for lithium bats and get a open / close installed

Thanks
