ddaggett1 Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 I'm trying to add the last devices to a large Insteon network, and three switches - all in the same area of the house - are not adding. That said, other switches in the same area (some in the same switch boxes) are adding. I'm getting the error below from one of them, which shows an inability to write the PLM Slave Link, I think. I've tried to reset the switches (multiple times) and reset (power cycle) the PLM and the ISY (both multiple times). I've tried to add the devices automatically (via Start Linking), manually (via New Insteon Device, but still having the ISY automatically determine the Device Type), and completely manually (via New Insteon Device and manually specifying the Device Type). Nothing works. What I have not tried to do is actually do a reset on the PLM (hold down the button on the right, wait 30 seconds, etc.). Should I do that? Any thoughts? If I have backed up the ISY device, and I fully reset the PLM, will the ISY reset the links in the PLM automatically, or is there a way to do that without having to manually re-add 80+ device?s Some other relevant information from the ISY and PLM is copied below as well. Teken Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Looks to be a noise issue or improper coupling of the electrical system. Perform the 4 tap (beacon) test from the PLM to the three devices and report back the results.

The second command in Blue was issued three times and got no answer. There is activity from another device 31.D7.46 which could be wireless device that would be best not be occurring during a device add. If done the File | Restore Modem (PLM) is required to rebuild PLM.

I have identified the wireless device that Lee mentions, and I can remove the battery before trying the next step, whatever that is. 3.) Reset the PLM? Rip the switches out of the wall? Hire someone who knows what he's doing to install all of this ? 4.) BTW, is the 4-tap test documented anywhere? I looked around online, and I find many references to having performed it, but I cannot seem to find the documentation. 5.) Is the fact that some of the devices are blinking red and some green a problem (and, again, apologies if this is a massively stupid question)? 6.) It may be worth noting that the house is pretty large. The ISY and PLM are both located within about three feet of each other, in the basement. The offending switches are all two floors up. BUT, there are lots (and lots and lots) of other Insteon devices (mostly 2477D and 2477S) located between the PLM and the upstairs, so I've always assumed that these other Insteon devices act as APs and thus I have never purchased a standalone AP. Do I need one? THANKS! BTW, I owe you both one if you have any intellectual property questions

Remove the device from the wall and wire it to a spare extension cord. This will allow you to move the switch where there is no interference / bad COM's. Once you have successfully added the device to the ISY move it back to the original placement. I only offer this because its less time consuming to do then to run around figuring out what the noise makers / signal suckers are etc. NOTE: Green indicates bridged opposite phase. Red means the device is on the same phase. Afterwards your goal is to determine what noise makers / signal suckers are present. Best Practices: Ensure the PLM is not plugged into the same circuit as a UPS, Computer, etc. Always confirm proper bridging / coupling via the 4 tap (beacon) test you just performed. The most direct approach is to unplug all the devices in the house but may not be the most practical. The next best is to turn off breakers one at a time to see if COM's improve. If they do you can focus on what electrical items are on those breakers etc. If you have any plugin dual band device you can move one of them into the room or by the PLM and see if you can bridge the network.
LeeG Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 The 4 tap Set button beacon test is covered in the PLM Quick Start manual that is linked to from the Manuals tab for 2413S PLM. Assuming the PLM is where the beacon test was initiated, blinking Red devices mean they are on the same 120v leg as the PLM, blinking Green means the device is on the opposite 120v leg as PLM. Blinking Green not adding means devices are receiving the PLM RF signal, they are on the opposite 120v leg, and where they are located is having issues talking to the PLM. A little unusual that a device would blink indicating RF signal received but not have good comm. If the ISY/PLM is far from power panel moving closer to power panel may help. Make sure PLM is not plugged into a surge/noise suppression power strip and any other electronics such as UPS are on a FilterLinc. Are the devices that will not add on the same 120v circuit? Seems unwise to have two folks guiding. teken will find the issue.

Good man! You will need to purchase a few Filter Lincs down the road to ensure any noise makers / signal suckers are not going to impact the system in the future.
