Suggestion for Phantom Node

Now that custom nodes exist, perhaps phantom nodes could exist as well.  Basically, it would be a place to park a device configuration should the device need to be factory reset/uninstalled/reinstalled on ISY.  More or less, you add a pretend device to ISY, specify what it is (KPL, switchlinc, etc) even though no actual device exists.  Then you could have it join scenes or be the target of a "replace with" command even though no actual Insteon device exists.  Then when you have an actual Insteon device in place, you do a "replace with" command transferring from the phantom node to a real device.

I would like phantom noses and devices. It would make development easier.

Hi apostolakisl,

So basically virtual nodes not tied to any protocol?

With kind regards,

Michel

I like this idea. Basically, once created they could replace any device (inheriting the type probably), then you can replace the phantom device with a real device (of same class) causing the phantom node to revert to a generic type again.

Whatever works :-P   I had thought it would be more along the lines of you select a protocol from a drop down list (ie like you pick KPL) or perhaps it copies the protocol along the with data from a current real node (of your choosing) already on your system.

Pseudo devices have been requested many times now.

I have been using X10 devices that don't exist to accomplish this.

One of those would have been me.  I did it several years ago.  But with custom nodes now existing, I'm thinking that perhaps a framework exists for phantom devices as well.  Even if you could just take a currently installed device and manually change the Insteon address to a bogus address, that would accomplish the goal.  Then the real device could be enrolled again under its real address.

You really need to place this idea on the ideal scale so it can be formally tracked. I love the idea and will back this feature request once its up.

I give up :?   Where/what is "ideal scale"?

At the home page of the forum on the right hand side is a direct link to the UDI Idea Scale. This site was created to track the real need for an idea that perhaps with enough support. UDI could set aside resources to make it happen down the road.

I haven't been able to access that site since they changed it from the original.

Password = doesn't work,

Request password in email = account doesn't exist,

Sign up for new account = already exists = can't do

I  believe I may have already posted that in the original site about third in the list but it got buried under a list of other wants.

OK, did it.  Never noticed that before.
