Remote Access Help Required

All,

I followed the notes on how to get remote access to my ISY, found the correct router and completing port forwarding as noted however I cannot gain access.  Any idea ?.  another note, when I run the port test (port forward network utility), it says it is not open.

Usually, if a port utility indicates that the port is not open, then it's not open. Which port utility? Which notes did you follow?

How are you attempting off-site access, your WAN address, a DNS service, something else?

to access, there is LAN IP adress (192....), WAN address (173....), external port and internal port.  Internal port points to LAN address, configured by your router.  External port routes to internal port.  WAN address is what one uses outside your own network.  To access from outside, you may need to add a colon, followed by your external port number.

With a web browser and on your own network, what happens when you try to access http://yourLANaddress:yourinternalport? Do you get to the ISY.  If so, what happens when you open a web browser outside your network and access http://yourWANaddress:yourexternalport?

Stu,

http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/517-how-to-enable-internet-access/and http://portforward.com/

As for how I am trying to access it, just by typing in the Remote IP (173...... VS 192.......)

Thanks

Are you trying to access it "remotely" while you're on the same network? This rarely works, to test you really do have to do it remotely. And like stusviews says, if an external checker says it isn't working... it almost certainly isn't working. Make sure you're forwarding the right port on the outside to the right port and ip address on the inside. Setting up a static dhcp lease for the ISY will make things more stable too.

There are two ports, http and https. Which port(s) did you open?

oberkc,

What would be my internal port and where do I find it ?, samw question  for external port portion.

Sorry, do not have much network knowledge.

Configuration, Network Settings. There's an HTTP port and an HTTPS port. All ports are internal until you open it.

You may select any port you wish so long as its not in use or going to conflict with a service using said port. The list Stu provided is a good start as to which port(s) to avoid etc.

You can select port 82 for now for HTTP: and report back success / failure. Hang in there you're almost done.

Ok so I changed the ports under the port forwarding tab of the router to portd 82 for public and private with the local IP of the ISY.  i used my iphone and typed in the 174.... IP and I got connected to the setup/config of the router.  Then having realized my wifi on the phone was on I turned it off and tried again. This time nothing came up.

I am assuming you entered 174.xxx.xxx.xxx:82 correct? Keep in mind you must also enter port 82 into the HTTP section in the ISY.

Teken,

Sorry, stupid question and lack being familiar, I was looking at the selections above not that tabs.  In any case it worked, now how to I get the HTTPS working and do I require the 443 port and finally on the list that stu provided what ports should I be looking at for use ?

You will follow the same process for the HTTPS port in your router and for the ISY. For now just use port 443 just to see if it works if it does you can change it to like 543 and confirm you have portal access via secure connection.

In the list of ports which Stu provided you will notice there are many . . .

You can simply pick one that is not on the list say you see a (making this up) list for ports 9000 in use but there are no 9292 listed. You can pick that range for your HTTP access etc.

Again, never apologize because this is part of learning and I am sure you will help out someone else down the line.

Teken,

443 did not work so I changed it on both the router and the ISY to 543.  In my phone browser with eifi of I entered https://173......:543and it worked (many thanks).  I will find a port that works and if there are any issues I will report back.

On a side note for anyone that is reading this, if you are with Shaw and are using their WIFI modem P/N: CGNM-2250, you cannot use ports 80 and 443.

Please ensure you double check using a normal PC web browser on port 543 that you see the padlock indicating the session is secure.

Teken,

Sounds good, I assume this will be from a machine not inside m local network ?, if the lock does not come up what are my next steps ?

Update:

I got the brother in-law to check and when he dials in firefox says it is connecting securely however it cannot be verified, is this ok ?

Thanks

Yes, you will want to use a computer outside of your LAN. It should be noted many businesses and services will not allow a non 443 port to be used. This is also seen in IE web browsers for some government websites.

Since this is for your own use and also via mobilinc this isn't a issue. I just wanted to call this out in case you decided to deploy more devices with secure connection.

Have a great weekend!

Port 80 is the default port for HTTP and should never be forwarded (opened to the 'net) or anyone would have access to your computer. Port 80 is safe to use on your LAN and, as 80 is the default port, does not need to be specified.

Thanks again to everyone, this is one of the main reason I chose ISY when looking for a controller, the wonderful support by forum members.

Glad everything worked out as you hoped.

Now, its time to move forward on other Home Automation aspects and spend more money!

Ha . . .
