Replace switch with a new one

I used to see the option on the menu for the device to "Replace" an old device with a new one.  But in 994i I am not seeing it like I saw it in my 99.  How do you replace an old switch with a new one now in 994i?

If your replacing a switch with the same kind, first link the new switch in the ISY then right click on the old switch and click on "replace...."

Quick question, since we're on the topic --

Can I replace a KPL relay device with a KPL dimmer device using the ISY "replace"?  If so, I'll do a quick swap this evening before the guests arrive, otherwise it'll be a mess of scenes and devices to update and I guess it'll have to wait until the new year...

Thanks!

I don't believe a KPL dimmer can be used to replace a KPL relay. Using the replace with choice. One is an On Off device the other one dims.

The replacement has to be close enough hardware wise for the replace with to show.

I was going to use one of the new 2635-222 On Off modules in place of an old 2456S3 ApplianceLinc. The replace option was not available.  As the new one was not close enough feature wise.

The replace has to be a similar device, dimmer switch with a dimmer switch, etc.

Since I have not added the new switch yet this is the reason I am not seeing the "Replace" command anywhere that I right click on another similar device?  In other words, I have to add a new switch first to activate the "Replace" option because otherwise I am not seeing it.  That was my reason for asking.  In the 99i I could always see the replace command on all the devices.  Now I don't with my 994i.

You do NOT need to add a new device in order to initiate a "Replace with." You do need to remove the device from any folder it may be in. The replace option is not available if the device is in a folder.

That's correct. Add the new device first, then right click on the old device and do a replace with....

The "replace with" command will show all compatible installed devices that can be used as a replacement.

Maybe that is the missing link,  The devices are in a folder.  I will give that a shot.  Thanks Stusviews.

Just a quick note for those following this thread and who may be new to the *Replace With* option. When you enroll the new device name it something different like say: Kitchen Light 2, where as the old one is called Kitchen Light.

Failure to adhere to this basic rule will cause the 994 Series Controller to cry and try to replace the device and then close out the Admin Console. What you're left is a corrupted and poorly added Insteon hardware in your system.

I've seen this many times over the years so don't make that mistake!

Lastly, it should be noted that some devices actually need to be deleted & removed once it has been replaced with another piece of hardware.

A perfect example is the Trigger Linc vs the newer Open-Close sensor. The older unit did not have a heart beat feature and if you try to use the replace with it will come back all screwed up. So essentially you will need to do the replace with first then delete the device from the controller and then add it back.

What this does is keeps any massive scenes, programs, etc still linked so you don't have to start from scratch.

When you replace a wired device you don't need to name it at all. The replacement procedure will 1) give the new device the replaced device's name, 2) replace the old links and scenes with identical new links and scenes and 3) assign the new device to programs that referred to the old device.

After the replacement is complete the ISY Administrative Console will close. When you restart, everything will appear as it was, but the replaced device will have the new Insteon ID. That's the only way you'll be able to see the change. You can then drag the replacement to its original folder.
