New PLM, and now garage door is opening by itself

Naptown

Recommended Posts

OK, I need help.  I just replaced an old PLM.  Purchased a new one and did the 'restore PLM'.  Everything seems to be working.  Twice now, my wife has called me and the garage door has opened by itself.  We are leaving on Friday for vacation, so I've gotta get this corrected.  I looked at the logs and don't see anything that stands out...  But I do see a TON of activity with my 'Floods ON' scene.

This morning when I was looking at my garage door sensors, they were showing that the doors were open when the doors were closed.  Not sure what changed, but now they look as if they did prior to my PLM swap.  I'm going to paste my log below.  I believe the garage door opened at approximately 2:04pm.

Do you have trigger reverse enabled on the I/O Linc for the GDO?

Negative, I do not have that selected.

OK, sorry for expecting anybody to read that wall of unformatted data.  It looked better before I submitted.

Update, this is strange but I have more details.  Every time we open the front door, the garage door opens...  I tried disabling the garage door and the front door both, but the garage still opens every time the front door is opened!  What am I missing?  Looked to see if the door was a controller of the garage door but it doesn't appear to be the case.

Based on what you wrote it's possible you manually linked it outside of the ISY?

Hard reset the door sensor and restore just that unit and report back if the GDO opens.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'm at work now and won't be able to try this until this evening.

OK, I tried a factory reset and restore the door sensor and it kept controlling the insteon 2450 garage door.  Even with both devices disabled, the front door would control the garage door.  So, I thought I would delete the garage door and re-install it.  This proved to be a bad idea.  Now I can't even add it back in and I'm getting the attached error.  (and the front door still continues to control the garage door even though I cannot add the garage door back into the ISY)

Out of course at this point I would unplug the 2413S PLM and wait 10-20 seconds. Reboot the 994 Series Controller next and wait for the controller to come back on line.

At this point its just easier to do the following and know if there is something else amiss.

1. Delete the door sensor, hard reset it per the full users manual. Add it back to the ISY and do nothing else from there.

2. Hard reset the I/O Linc, add it back to the controller and report back.

Make sure you're actually doing a factory reset. For the IOLinc, remove it, hold down the set button then plug it back in. After a few seconds it will start to buzz, continue to hold down the set button until the buzzing stops.

I would also do a factory reset on the front door switch. It sounds like you may have cross linked your devices.

dang, sorry guys.  I have an ability to make more of a mess than I should.

OK, got both devices removed.  Unplugged the PLM for 20 seconds, then power cycled the isy.  the door sensor added back in - no problem.  I can't get the 2450 added back in.  I did the hard reset (Held set button, plugged in, held 'set' through beep approximately 15 seconds).  To try to link it, I'm holding the set button for about 3 seconds and the led blinks (linking mode I believe).  I tried the 'start linking' and it doesn't recognize it.  I tried to manually add it with the address and letting 'auto discover' find the device type.  I don't see a 2450 on the dropdowns either.  This is the error I'm now getting when trying to manually add and use auto discover:

You most likely have a communications issue or powerline noise. The IOLinc is not a dual band device. Try either moving the device to a different location or add a dual band device, such as a range extender, on/off module, or lamp linc close to the IOLinc then try to re-link it.

Do you have any CFL or fluorescent bulbs close to the IOLinc?

Teken & Techman,

Thank you for your responses.  OK, might try the extension cord tonight (because it's still all wired up to the opener).

CFL bulbs - I just recently replaced a TON of cfls with new LED bulbs.  I don't think I have any cfls left.  It's worked for 3 years and my other door opener is fine (although plugged in 20 feet away on another outlet in the ceiling).

I recently added a wired POE camera system and a wifi camera.  Could this be a noise source?  LED bulbs are new, but should be ok.

Here is another weird thing that started happening...  Kitchen has 2 dimmerLincs that have worked great for 3 years.  A while ago, I noticed when I would turn one of those switches off, both circuits would shut off.  Could this be a failed switch causing noise?  No baby monitors....  What are some other common sources of noise?

edit - I do have a fluorescent shop light hanging from the ceiling.  Bulbs look good and seems operational.

Anything on the power line can be a source of noise, especially power supplies (wall warts), but noise can't cause a link between devices. Does the errant responder (the one that turns off) also turn on when the other kitchen dimmer is turned on? Do both kitchen dimmers control the same load?

Link to comment

ok, tried the extension cord into the house and I'm getting the same response about failed insteon engine.

Kitchen issue - 2 dimmerLincs on different loads.  Used to work independently just fine.  Now, when I turn out the kitchen cans, it takes out the kitchen pendants at the same time.

Could this all be related to the PLM that I just installed?  It was a Amazon warehouse purchase, so there's no telling what could be wrong with it.  Everything else seems to be working well.  the date code on the new PLM is 4615.

That is a very new 2413S PLM - Can you offer a little more information about the PLM just for reference sake for others to follow. On the white sticker will be the production date and hardware revision number. Please also state what the ISY indicates as the firmware for this device.

Have you plugged the I/O Linc into the same outlet as the other garage circuit that works to see if you can add it back? Again the easiest thing to do is take a really long extension cord and wire it to the same outlet as the PLM and try again.

Worst case remove the wires from the device and bring it to the same room as the PLM and try again. Using the extension cord obviously saves you lots of time from rewiring the I/O Linc from the GDO.

Since this thread has taken off into several directions lets try to focus on the task at hand.

1. Successfully add all the devices that were deleted and hard reset back to the controller.

2. After doing the above does the door sensor still control the GDO? Its assumed either the hard reset was not done properly or the PLM still has the links in the data base.

PLM is a 2413S V2.2 and has a date code of 1546.  That translates to the 46 week of 2015.

Yes, I just tried the known good outlet (other i/o linc) and get the same results.  The other garage door and i/o Linc is working normal as the past 3 years.

1. Successfully add all the devices that were deleted and hard reset back to the controller.  - I don't quite understand this.  I'm still unable to add my insteon 2450 back.  "hard reset back to the controller" is specifically what I'm not understanding.  I have done a hard reset on the new PLM, and a hard reset on the i/o linc.

2. After doing the above does the door sensor still control the GDO? Its assumed either the hard reset was not done properly or the PLM still has the links in the data base.

I suggest you bring the I/O Linc to the same outlet as the PLM or use an extension cord and try again. If doing both fails to add the device back either the hardware is defective or it requires a proper hard reset outlined in the full users manual.

When you select Help -> About what does the UI / Firmware say your on?

At this point it would be very helpful to launch the level 3 error logging and copy and paste what happens when you try to add the device so others can review the error log.

I brought the i/o linc in the basement and low and behold - it connected!  I have taken it back outside and it appears to be working.

What a stressful night.  Running late to mother in law's bday dinner, ordered a chicken sandwich and it came out with a huge hair on it.  Kind of lost my appetite so I just ate some waffle fries.  Then I get a call and have to separate from family to run back to work.  Wait for 90 minutes while some mechanical workers inspect building for gas leak.  Just thinking of the time I could be working on my HA setup.  Leaving on vacation shortly so I want my insteon stuff working while I'm away!  Anyway, brought the i/o linc inside and tried in an outlet near the PLM and it connected!  Took it outside and reinstalled it.  Tested ok.  Does that mean I've got some new RF noise out in the garage area?

But....  I don't think I'm outta the woods yet though.  At dinner, I checked a couple of times to see if my Mobilinc pro would work.  My start screen is my camera and they would pull up, but then Mobilinc would just suddenly close.

Unfortunately, as I sit here testing some stuff in the administration console on my PC, it just unexpectedly shut off.  Now what?!?

I definately feel this is related to my left hand approach of replacing a PLM. Again, only I can mess up a simple job that easy.  What should I check now?

Edit - Looking at mobilinc on my phone, it shows certain devices as turned off even when they are on.  This is making me circle back to the POE cameras.  I have 2 of them that run off of a POE injector.  Basically, that's a power pack that is new to my system.  I don't have time to disable / check those tonight - I'll have to wait until tomorrow night.  Have these ever been the source of RF noise for anyone else?  I'm just trying to think of what is new to my network.  I do have a new large power strip that my isy is plugged into.  My PLM is plugged into a dedicated outlet.  I've gotta hit the sack tonight.

Take a deep breath you got the first part taken care of which is getting the I/O Linc to enroll into the network. Your next step is to confirm that the door sensor no longer opens the GDO.

The rest is secondary at this point . . .

Haha, thank you.  Correct, the door sensor no longer controls the GDO...  They are both working independently as they used to.  But, I'm stilling getting bogus readings from my isy and mobilinc on my phone.

You've got a communications issue. It's not RF as the IOLinc is power line only.

You have two options, either eliminate the power line noise if in fact that's causing your problem or add some dual band devices on the circuit close to the garage IOLinc, assuming that you have other dual band devices installed. This will improve the reliability of your Insteon mesh network.

Keep in mind that if your communication to the garage IOLinc is marginal your garage door could experience unwanted activity.

Since you deleted the two devices I have to assume you never refreshed the Mobilinc Application. I would do a poll of the network in the app and see if the status is correct.
