Z-wave switch can't control other devices?

Featured Replies

I've got 2 Z-Wave switches (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E1OVFAK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) hooked up and added to my ISY. I can control them from the ISY (on/off/etc) but I don't seem to see anything on the ISY when I use the switch itself (nothing in event viewer, state doesn't update in ISY). So I can't use these switches to control anything else, trigger scenes/programs.

If I turn the switch on then manually refresh its status in the ISY it will show the state correctly. When I add these devices to a scene they go as a responder and I don't have the option to make them a controller.

Is this a limitation of the switch itself? The ISY 4.x firmware? Me just doing something wrong? I've read the threads about scene control but I'm not clear on how to tell if it's a multi-channel device, etc.

Thanks for any enlightenment!

It's a limitation of many zwave switches. Due to a (now expired) Lutron patent, many don't send instant status when they are locally controlled.

The Homeseer switches are the first post-patent device that supports instant status. There are also some that paid the license fee to Lutron, but it can be hard to identify from the marketing.

Enerwave switches also give instant status updates. I have about 30 in my house with energy monitor as well, so I see how much power each circuit is pulling.

Do you happen to have a model number for the switches you use? The energy monitor would be an awesome feature.

dzarn-they have a seven button switch similar to a KPL- no energy monitoring-ZWN-SC7

The dimmer w/energy monitor is ZW-500DM

They have three ways as well. I use all varieties of them in my house and so far we really like them. They have zwave receptacles too. I found them in the Topgreener store on eBay.

Do the Leviton zwave switches provide instant status?

Leviton Vizia RF+ provide instant status.  Their newer line "Decora" or something do not.

For Leviton devices in the RF+ line, look for model numbers that start with "VR" such as:

VRS15 (on/off switch)

VRI06 (incandescent dimmer - 600 watt)

VFR01 (fan motor control)

VRR15 (receptacle)

If you want instant status, avoid model numbers that start with "DZ" such as:

DZS15 (on/off switch)

DZMX1 (universal dimmer)

DZR15 (receptacle)
