I/O Linc 2450 "Cannot determine Insteon Engine"

I just ordered a new I/O Link 2450 and I cannot add it to my ISY.  If I try to use the "Start Linking" it never finds the device and if I try manually adding it I get that "Cannot determine Insteon Engine" message.  In the logs it shows "Failed to add device, reason 3".  Not sure what that means.

 

Also if I manually select the 2450 from the list of devices it shows "refurbished" and the starting codes dont match my devices address.

 

I also got some logs while doing the "Start Linking" method:

Was the device in fact purchased as refurbished and does it have a ® at the end of the product number? Have you taken the unit and plugged it in next to the 2413S PLM to see it makes a difference?

It does not have an "®" in the product number.  When I ordered it it didnt say refurbished but that was the only option for the IO Linc 2450 outside of the "Auto Detect" option.

 

1. What controller are you using 99 vs 994?

2. What firmware and UI is indicated in the Help - About?

3. Have you tried to plug the I/O Linc next to the 2413S PLM?

However I also just got a new garage door kit from Smarthome and it included another I/O Linc 2450 with a similar address.  I plugged that device into an outlet near the PLM and its doing the exact same thing.  Perhaps ISY does not recognize I/O Linc 2450 version 2.4?

That would be highly unlikely - can you please reboot the controller and try again. If you could also try both methods to add the I/O linc and provide the level 3 error logs for both attempts that would be great.

 

Please plug the I/O Linc in the (same) outlet as the PLM and report back success / failure.

I/O Linc and PLM in the same outlet...

Still wont link/detect the I/O Linc.

 

Here are the logs from both.  Both I/O Linc addresses start with 3D.  No device in the list start with that address range so I thought maybe it was a new revision of the 2450 that might need to be added.

I unplugged both the PLM and the ISY getting everything into one outlet.  So everything has been power cycled multiple times at this point.

 

However I did it again and same behavior with both devices.

This is my first setup  These devices are the first I have connected and tried to Link.  :?  :cry:

I/O Linc 2450 (with  Minotaur Engineering IVT2)

I/O Linc 2450 (Garage Kit)

 

I also have some other devices ready to add:

FanLinc 2475F

Dimmer Switch 2477D

Keypad Dimmer Switch 2334-2

Mini Remote 2342-2

Well, since the I/O Linc is only a single band device and you plugged it into the same outlet as the 2413S PLM not sure why its having such a hard time finding it.

 

For the sake of asking please ensure 2413S PLM is plugged into dedicated outlet void of any other electronics. Have you tried to add the device using both methods one being the *whirling 2 colored arrows* and pressing the set button?

 

Along with entering the Insteon ID using the *New Insteon* using both methods of auto vs manually selecting the hardware. Last but not least try to follow the full users manual and hard reset the I/O Linc and try again.

Your log shows three attempts to access the 2450 with no responses back to the commands to add it. After the start linking finds the 2450's six digit ID and the and process was started.

 

If your log was not running in Level 3. It would show additional information like Hops= for the command sent and may give added information for us.

 

Contacting UDI as suggested may also be a way to go.

I got a really long network cable and put the PLM in a different outlet/circuit/room.  It worked!  So I put it back into the oringial room in a different outlet.  Still on the same circuit and its still working.  Was even able to add my FanLinc that I installed upstairs (pretty sure its not connecting wirelessly).

 

Now I am going to try and write a program to monitor the I/O Linc with the feezer sensor on it.  Should be fun! :)

That strongly suggests that you have power line interference. If so, you need to track down the problematic device(s) and use one or more FilterLincs. The most common devices that need filtering are computers, peripherals and UPSs. What else is on that specific circuit?

Sounds like you are now making some progress.

From your findings. I would also be thinking power line issues.

I have my UPS and computing gear on a Filterlinc.

The UPS is on the bottom filtered outlet and the PLM is in the unfiltered pass through outlet on the front.

So I have a ton of CFL lights all over and I just discovered how much problems they can cause you with Insteon signals.

 

I put one of my I/O Linc units on the garage door outlet on the ceiling of my garage.  The garage door openen has two lights in it (both CFL).  Anytime I would trigger the garage door opener with the relay on the I/O Linc I would lose connection to the I/O Linc for a while.

 

Turns out that the lights on the garage door opener were coming on and they happen to be CFLs.  It was causing so much interference that it would cause the I/O Linc to fail communicating with the PLM.  Im pretty sure its the CFL and not the motor (but it could be both).  When I manually turned the CFL lights off I could then Query the I/O Linc again.

 

So should I put a filter on the garage door opener?  I would really like to get something less bulky that the Insteon filter.  Perhaps something I can install in the garage door opener maybe.

Filter Lincs can be used for many of the plugin devices but obviously won't help you around the house for other light fixtures. As you probably noticed there are many noise makers - signal suckers in the home that directly impact the Insteon network. As indicated way above that should have been your first step in the trouble shooting process.

 

Once you have identified and removed, replaced, or filtered all noise makers - signal suckers. Your next step is to confirm proper coupling - bridging of the Insteon network via the 4 tap (beacon) test outlined in the full users manual.

Most GDOs plug in at the ceiling. Why is the size of a FilterLinc a problem there?

It probably wouldnt be a problem except stacking the FilterLinc on and I/O Linc would result in one huge conglomeration dangling from the ceiling outlet.  Would probably need to do something to secure it up there to make sure it doesnt fall.

 

However I just got a few LED bulbs on my trip to Lowes and everything is working fine now.  No more CFL's and the garage door motor doesnt seem to cause the same problems that the CFL's were.  Even my florecent bulbs in the garage are not causing any problems so far.  If they do I would probably install something like the Leviton inline filters before the balast.
