arw01 Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Must have one of those dreaded DC motors behind their Whisper Quiet sales mark there: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Decorators-Collection-Palm-Cove-52-in-Indoor-Outdoor-Natural-Iron-Ceiling-Fan-51422/204501516 Would not even work on high speed with the fanlinc in control off it. Was so frustrated after a couple of hours of messing with it, just wired it straight to power. Wondering what my options would be as I did not run the wires down to a switch as I intended to use a keypad with the fanlinc. Stuffing that little bugger in the canopy was not fun with all the wago lever locks scattered around. And why is Smarthome so cheap they cannot use real copper wires instead of this aluminum stuff. Alan
G W Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 And why is Smarthome so cheap they cannot use real copper wires instead of this aluminum stuff. Alan You're going to have to explain yourself. Best regards, Gary Funk
Brian H Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 I have never see any Insteon wire in devices with aluminum wires. Aluminum needs special connections. Are you sure you are not thinking the tinned copper wires where aluminum?
jtara92101 Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 I have like a zillion devices, and just moved. They are tinned copper wires. I've been cutting them back, stripping, and re-tinning to make them nice prior to re-installation. "tinning" = coating with solder. Tinning is a GOOD THING. The tinned wires work nicely with the Ideal push-in connectors (foo on wire nuts!). But you do need to strip back a bit more than the way they come for them to go in completely. Tin the ground as well if you are using the Ideals for grounds. That's the one place, though, I still use big green wire-nuts. If you are so unfortunate as to have aluminum HOUSE WIRING, you need to use special wire-nuts. The connection is encapsulated in grease. Prevents galvanic corrosion when joining with copper. And/or special CU/AL outlets and switches. My old place had aluminum wiring for the 240 appliances. Fortunately, that's the only place they used it! (It's why I know about the special wire-nuts...)
arw01 Posted July 12, 2016 Author Posted July 12, 2016 Will cut back a line on the fanlic and see. The wires were individual and could be tinned all the way to the insulation. Personally using Wago 222 and they can take the two different types. Alan
stusviews Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 It's somewhat difficult to tin wire under the insulation. That would also make stranded wire very stiff
arw01 Posted July 13, 2016 Author Posted July 13, 2016 It's somewhat difficult to tin wire under the insulation. That would also make stranded wire very stiff Exactly which is what made me think they were aluminum because they were all tinned right to the insulation if they are. Did not recall to go look at the ends that I snipped slightly to go into the wagos the correct depth to see if it's copper or not on that Fanlinc. Got my lovely buttons that do me no good, anyone have a solution figured out for the "DC MOTOR" fans? Alan
arw01 Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 call off the hounds, I think I see the glint of copper in the snips off the end, whew, the house won't be falling apart now!
