Have dual wall switches for fan but only need one

Featured Replies

I just moved into a new house and most of the rooms are prewired for ceiling fans that all have two separate wall switches. One switch for the fan the other for the light. The problem is some of rooms I will never put in a light kit making the second switch useless.

What can I do with switch? Can I repurpose it and put in a KeypadLinc? Will it work there? Has anyone ran into this issue?

I had the same thing. I just put keypads in that case so I can monitor and control other switches.

I would think this issue comes up all the time: there is an extra box location somewhere...now, what can I do with it?!.  Yes!  Put a keypad or another switch and use it however makes sense in your house.  So long that this box location has hot and neutral, put an insteon switch of some time and provide control of something useful.

In one case where the light controller was wired to the load, I added a Lutron motion sensor dimmer in parallel with the controller, set a a low level to function as a night light as needed. In a second location where the controller was in a different wall box, I used a Lutron non-dimming motion sensor wired to a Micro Module.

Likely sacrilege around here but my wife hates anything that breaks up walls and wants things as small as possible if they must be there so I actually removed the double gang boxes and replaced them with single gang boxes in a number of places throughout the house.  Little drywall work and you need to make sure the number of wires going through is to code in a single gang but overall pretty easy project.
