Both of these are on sale. I would like to be able to control my TV, TiVO and fireplace (all remote control) via phone app (if it exists) or Echo (Alexa, movie mode - dims lights, starts fireplace)

 

Do I need both of these items to make it work?

After watching this video it appears it should work, IF the Echo can see it. I would contact Insteon about this.

I use both. Each has a different use. The transmitter changes Insteon signals to IR. I use that to have an Echo control my audio system. The receiver converts IR signals to Insteon, That allows me to use my IR remote to control lighting.
