Z-wave has a habit of many devices being battery operated and I prefer wall power whenever possible.  I've seen some motion sensors that will run on a usb cable, but that's kind of ugly for my sitation.

Does anyone know if there are any other devices out there besides the Homeseer HSM200?  It seems expensive for what it is or maybe better said, it may be expensive for my little use case.

Are you looking for a direct plug in motion sensor, not one with a cord?   Homeseer seems to be the only option:

These things seem less than practical, outlets are rarely located where you would want a motion sensor.

And yet the other option is battery operated motion sensors which end up in locations that are inconvenient for changing batteries.  :)  I really dislike the idea of maintaining sensors with batteries.  I know it's me being weird.... but I just don't like the idea of installing something I know is going to stop working and then stays not working until I get around to fixing it.

In my case, I just want to turn a light on if someone enters a small room.  I've got a 110v right by the door, so it's pretty straight forward for me.

The third option is cabled power supply.  Aeotec comes with a small flat USB cable, relatively inconspicuous.

Maybe use a USB-powered sensor, and a very short USB cable?  Could even mount the sensor directly to the plug-in USB power adapter, or change out the outlet for one with built-in USB power.

As I get older and used countless battery operated devices in my home I share the same view. It doesn't mean I am adverse in using battery operated devices just that if there is a 120 VAC equivalent I consider that option. If a product supports both using a rechargeable battery and allows low voltage / 120 VAC.

Its a no brainer in terms of what to buy and use . . .

Every month I spend about six hours replacing, charging, testing, and rotating different battery cells. Its a time suck that I'm trying to reduce never mind the on going costs associated with rechargeable batteries. Ideally what should happen is companies using and expanding the solar / self generating piezeo electric modules.

Several companies have been using this technology for years - not sure why others haven't followed when its clear there is no real down side to using this technology. Using solar, human activation, along with a small capacitor / rechargeable battery offers truly the best in class use for all and reduces land fill waste.

I think I'll try the Homeseer even though it seems a bit expensive.

Considering it offers multi sensors along with LED color notifications it does add more value. I really can't say I like the physical looks of this device but hey at least someone made it! I have to assume since this device offers so many features more than likely it will require 5.XX support firmware to be able to see and use those options.

Circle back with the group and let us know how it works and what options are presently available for use.

HSM200 results with v4.5.4.

Three nodes

1. Motion Sensor: sends an On only, I use a program to control a scene.

2. Multilevel Sensor: temperature is reported in Celcius (only), lens is white (only), Illumination can be set to on or off.

3. Notify Sensor: no known use

Aside: a powerline WiFi extender wrecked havoc with the  HSM200.

I've got mine and installed it.  It is smaller than I imagined, which is good.  Mine does Fahrenheit apparently.  So far, so good.  I think it's location is on the edge of my z-wave network/range.  Occasionally I think the network misses the motion being sent to the controller. I'm happy so far with it.

What's the story about the color LED? Can it be modified for use in programs and when does it turn different colors?

I'll try to test it.  When I had it setup here in my office and didn't have it working quite right, if I set the color it would blink once really fast and not stay on.  I'm on 5.0.4 beta/alpha

Here's the HSM200 Guide. ISY v4.5.4 doesn't support anything more than I've posted. I've requested support to change from centigrade Celcius to Fahrenheit.

Well, I have to say that Homeseer responds very quickly. Unfortunately, when the say "cannot" I interpret that as "will not." From my limited experinece with Z-wave, most thing can be changed by setting parameters. Here's a copy of their reply:

Hello Stu,

We cannot provide support for ISY hardware. I recommend reaching out to ISY customer support.

Best,

LOL - You have to at least say the response was very direct. Just to be clear you had asked the company for what exactly? Like the parameters to change some values so it would do X vs Y?

Yup, that's what I requested. I even provided the particular version of the ISY firmware I'm using in the event that it mattered.

You should respond that you're not requesting them to support ISY hardware, you're requesting them to support THEIR hardware.  :)

Parameter 1 value sets the On time before an Off is issued. I'm still searching for the parameter that changes from ºC to ºF,

Anyone have any additional luck with this sensor?

  • From the Smart Things driver, I can see the config parameters, using ISY v4 latest, I can use REST to get and set those parameters.
  • As others noted, temp is reported in degrees C, not F. It would be great if ISY allowed a setting stored in ISY for the default format for reporting units.

But, I can't seem to make my basic use cases work. And v5 seems to be in forever alpha, so I'm not willing to switch yet. (~100 devices, home very automated)

  • Has anyone found a way to use REST to trigger Z-wave command class actions? (such as turn light on/off, set color values, read temperature or luminance)
  • I'd like to use the light as an indicator by the front door. Different colors mean I left some window, door, gate open. BUT I can't set the color in v4. Anyone else know how? I tried setting all config parameters 0-255 to 15 while the light was on, but the color never changed.
  • I'd like to use the temp to turn off my whole house fan once it gets warmer outside than inside. But v4 just has "if sensor value = 23.6C" not allowing me to compare against another sensor. And I can't seem to get it via a config parameter, so I can't use the workaround of getting the value via REST in my rPi and poking it into an ISY variable.

Any suggestions? Are there other z-wave multisensors that will work better with v4 or am I stuck due to limitations with ISY and v4?

Thanks for any help!

I don't know the answers to your question.  I'm running v5.  My device does show temperature in F.  The motion sensor I have noticed is not always 100% but my location might lead to that.  I kind of wonder if there is a setting that controls/allows only 1 trigger in x amount of minutes.  I haven't tried to dig into it to figure it out.
