Scenes

I have been working with ISY and Insteon devices for about a year now.  Off and on.  I find I have to relearn it each time.  :(.  I have read the Wiki and watched the demo, but I am obviously missing something.

 

When creating a scene with ISY, we add devices as controllers or responders. 

 

I assume when adding a device such as a keypad link button as a controller you are actually linking as a controller and Button LED Backlight Responder.  Correct?

 

Once devices have been linked to a scene ad controllers or responders, according to the Wiki, you highlight the scene folder name and adjust the linked devices with the parameters you wish to be applied when the scene is triggered.

 

I thought I read that clicking on the linked device inside the scene will allow you to adjust the local settings of the device and these are not values used when triggering a scene.

 

I have read through this forum where people have stated their scenes are not working and the response was to make sure the settings are the same in both the scene level and the local level.  In fact I think I had this issue last year and set them up this way for a fanlink setup.

 

With Keypad links there are other aspects that may interfere with this  

 

There is Toggle, Non-Toggle On and Non-Toggle Off.  

 

So Toggle is obvious.  Press on, Press again and off.  What is the difference between Non Toggle On and Non Toggle Off?  Does this mean pressing sends an On signal every time or Off Every time?

 

Mutual Exclusive is also somewhat clear, but not sure how it interacts with Toggle, Non-Toggle On and Non-Toggle Off.  I think the video gave the example of sliding the dim to 100 on one button and 0 on the other.  Maybe the two buttons were in toggle mode to make sure the key backlight remains on.

 

 

The application I wish to achieve is as follows

 

6 button Keypad Link at the top of the stairs, dimmer switch at the bottom of the stairs, micro dimmer in stair light.  Then downstairs I have 3 lights, each with dimmer switches attached.

 

I would like the Large Top Button to be All On, The Large Bottom Button to be All Off 

 

Then the Downstairs Dimmer and KPL A turn the Micro Dimmer Stair Light on/off

Light 1 Dimmer and KPL B turn light 1 on and off 

Light 2 Dimmer and KPL C turn light 2 on and off

Light 3 Dimmer and KPL D turn light 3 on and off

 

So if I press the all Lights on, the stair and three downstairs lights should go on and All On, KPL a, B, C and D go on (given the lights are on).  If I want to turn Light 2 off, I could press KPL C to turn it off and KPL C Backlight should go out.

 

If I press All Off, they should all go out (lights and Key Backlights) except for the All Off Key, which should now be lit.

 

My next issue is that the new Stair Light is way too bright.  I would like to set the All Lights On Scene and the Stair Light Only Scene to only illuminate the stair light to 60%.   So far trying to create this has not worked.

 

I am also wondering about dimming any of the lights using the KPL A, B, C and D buttons with a long press to dim or brighten.

 

Is what I am looking to do possible, or do I have to set up something a little simpler?

There are a lot of questions here.  I will try to answer some.

The LED backlight will be ON when the button is on and OFF when the button is off.  Nothing you can do about that.  Having said that, when an insteon device is a controller, it is also a responder, by definition.  There is no way to make an insteon device only a controller (and not responder) when creating scenes with the ISY.

I do not know what you have read, but responders respond uniquely for each controller.  For a scene with multiple controllers, each responder in that scene can be programmed to respond differently for each of the controllers.  In my head, it also helps to think of the "scene" as, simply, the PLM as controller.

 

What is the difference between Non Toggle On and Non Toggle Off?

Non-toggle ON will send an ON command for each button press.  Non-toggle OFF will send an OFF command for each button press.

Thanks.  You have cleared some things up.  This should help me get a little further with the programming.  The multiple controllers supporting unique settings for the same devices in a common scene is interesting.  That may be why I am not seeing what I think should be occurring, however, where to I set the settings on a per controller basis?  I guess the settings need to be programmed when the red italic controller is highlighted rather than the scene folder being highlighted.

Exactly.  Click on the red controller device within a scene, rather than the scene itself.  Change the responder levels for the other devices in the main window.  They can be the same as the scene levels, or different.  Do this for each controller for which you want different responder levels.

 

I am hoping that the way to accomplish your goals has become more clear?

I hope to be able to validate what I have learned here this weekend.  Also after thinking about things, I am wondering if I can get the keypad lights to work the way I wish by creating s scene of scenes.  So with this method, I would simply create scenes for the 4 middle buttons.  The controller for each of the four scenes would be one of the 4 internal KPL keys as well as a program from ISY that will link the All On at the top or All Off at the bottom.  This will probably require a little more thought, but may work.
