mixing Z-wave and Insteon

Featured Replies

Posted

I just ordered my first Z-wave ISY and I am going to put it in to a mixed Insteon and Z-wave environment.

Can I create a scene that uses both. In particular ALL ON/OFF?

That depends on which firmware version you have on the ISY -- this feature is currently in the *alpha test* version 5.0.10 and not in any previous version.  So, if you're brave, and willing to deal with the potential issues that might come up in any alpha or beta test versions of products, you can try it and see how well it works for you.

I will definately try the new alpha. Mixing the two system could lead to some amazing automation and increase the amount of units I can use.

So I assume if the Z-wave device is pressed and and insteon device is in the new scene; the ISY would send the code to the insteon device or visa-versa. This would be real cool and powerful.

My experience is that zwave devices work fine as responders using software v4, but not as controllers.

How would you handle an ALL OFF/ON command. I can only think of a program if one button is pressed?

I will only use Z-Wave Plus so I will get status of each switch when pressed.

"One button"?  Are you using an insteon keypad button to trigger the ALL ON/OFF?  If so, the z-wave devices should respond just fine.

Otherwise, yes, a program.  Or, apparently, V5 of the insteon software.

My house is a mixture of Insteon, z-wave, and even a few X-10 devices and I use scenes all the time with them. No problems at all. Well, every now and then I have a scene in my mbr where an insteon switch turns on a z-wave outlet and that sometimes seems to "miss". Haven't had that problem in quite a while, though

I am using 5.0.10 but haven't had any problems with that either

*** oberkc indicated, v4+ does not have the capability to use a Z-Wave module as a scene controller, only as a responder. If you're using v4+, then the only way to have a Z-wave device be a controller is to use a program.

Just wanted to add that multi-channel devices are not supported in v4.x.

The hardware must support instant status for this to operate as you expect.
