Upcoming new Computer....what should I look for?

Featured Replies

Question - have you considered one of the new small form factor computers like the intel NUC? It’s very light weight do it yourself, but you can really control what you get.

I purchased the intel NUC skull canyon. The online reviews were great and it lives up to the performance stated.

You’ll need to purchase your own RAM, and m.2 style SSD’s. You’ll also need to buy your own OS Ideally on a thumb drive. Install is pretty easy.

I believe there is also a vendor that Pre builds the full solution for you.

This approach has a plus and minus side. You’re installing your own content and can manage the quality and easily replace the most common components. The down side is that you have a larger tech support role since you picked the components.

Intel seems pretty good about updates driver releases.

This blog here seems pretty dedicated to the NUC http://nucblog.net

I enjoyed their discussion of the new Samsung 960 M2 SSD’s. I need an upgrade recently.

I think they also have a product configuration which outputs a list of things to buy from Amazon.

Overall, I still find my Mac laptop the best user experience and very reliable.
