Assigning devices to rooms in the ISY Portal

The ISY Portal allows you to assign/map a device to a room. However when I import my Universal Devices into Google Home, they all appear as “unassigned”. The portal says this field is (Optional - Not Used).

In the Google Home app, I can then assign devices to a room. However if I need to re-import my devices again, I will lose all the mapping’s. Is there a way that when you import your devices the room mapping can also be set during the import?

I asked Michel to share his thoughts. If it doesn’t allow it, it begs the question why the room feature is in the portal.

Have you posed the question to Google?

LOL, where? Their “submit feedback” probably goes to a call center in Asia where they don’t understand and write it up incorrectly.

For ISY you will have to reverse your sunrise and sunset lines to compensate for the time difference. :)

Google actually has great support, try the chat or call option from the store page which has worked great for me in the past, but not for questions like this. There's also a forum but I haven't been on it for a while.

Apparently this might have been a bug introduced in a September Google Home update. Does anyone know if assigning rooms from the ISY Portal ever set them on Google Home when linking?

Hi All,

This has to be reimplemented. It's in our list of things to do.

With kind regards,

Michel

BTW Michel,    as you know for sure already, there is a very useful addition for the Universal Devices option in Google Home, allowing it to check for new devices. It is no longer necessary to unlink and re-link.  ISY is the best !

My experience is that for non-free Google products (such as Google Home, Chromecast, etc) their phone support is superb, almost at the level of Universal Devices support :-)   .

Will rooms be implemented in the Amazon Echo, too?

In the Google Home / Assistant App  ----}  Home Control  ----}  Devices  ----}  Universal Devices (at top of page). Until recently only option was 'unlink'  and if you wanted to add a device then you needed to unlink Universal Devices and then add all devices again. Now much easier by checking for new devices.

Very weird !!!!!!  I was about to take a screenshot of my Iphone to post here and this morning indeed there is only unlink.  I was not drinking yesterday (lol) and am sure that the option of checking for new devices was there. I actually used it twice...... Hopefully it will be back.

Amazon recently released version 3 of the Smart Home Skills API. It expanded the capabilities (actions, commands) of devices that can be reported in discovery, provided for asynchronous responses to calls, and allows push-based state reporting. There appears to be no "room" functionality included in the new API nor is a "room" attribute included in the discovery response payload.

The way that Alexa is handling rooms is that the user must place an Echo/Dot/Show/etc. in a group with the devices in the same room in the Alexa app. The Echo should then properly control devices in that room with shortcut descriptions (I have not yet tested this). But this has to be setup in the Alexa app and I don't see a way for the ISY Portal information to perform this function or influence this process. So for now, the "room" attribute in the ISY Portal is still "not used" for Alexa users.

EDIT: IMO, the most exciting thing about the v3 API is the ability to report specific capabilities for devices. It's probably a ways down the road, but once UDI can get the ISY to report capabilities for Nodes supported by node servers based on their definitions in the nodedef.xml, it will open up some amazing capabilities. For example, I will be able to ask Alexa to increase the temperature in the pool, report the spa temperature, or set custom modes in the alarm system (to date I am running all of my Alexa home automation through the ISY instead of using native capabilities where available).

Hi kingwr,

We have already implemented everything in V3 including A/V (you can map to network resources or variables through the portal). Alas, we are still waiting for certification. It's been 3 weeks already and I am rather disheartened after we spent all the time/effort.

With regards to Nodes, Alexa is very much type based. So, everything has to be defined á priori. I don't think we can simply add any command/capability we want. For instance, they must first define a toilet before we can implement "flush"! :)

With kind regards,

Michel

Thanks for the update.

So in regard to nodes, do we need a way to map a node to a defined type of device then? For example, the temp_control nodes on my pool controller are a lot like thermostats and reuse some the same status values and commands (e.g., CLISPH). Since the v3 API allows you to specify distinct capabilities for devices, would there be a way to tell the Smart Home API that the temp_control node for my pool is a "thermostat" with only on, off, set setpoint, increment setpoint, decrement setpoint, and report current temp and setpoint capabilities based on its definition in the nodedef.xml file?

I just setup google home on my ISY994i. I noticed that I don’t have to unlink it when adding or removing new devices. This is done in the ISY Portal and there is an icon with a little head and a circle - pressing it gives option to send spoken to google home. After doing this they will show up soon after in th google home app after a refresh. You can also remove a device and it will remove also. I’m not sure when this was feature was added since I am new to this but the current documentation still suggests that the only way is to unlink and relink in google home app.

Does anyone know if this has ever worked (assigning ISY items on the portal to Google “rooms”) before? Michel says Benoit has answered this question, but I can’t find his response.
