ISY + Alexa + Mobilinc

Recommended Posts

I am very new to using the ISY.  Please forgive me but very confused after reading several posts elsewhere in regards to Alexa, the Portal Module and the Mobilinc Module.   Here is what I would like to accomplish.  It is my understanding that Alexa requires the Portal Module.  Also that Alexa (Portal Module) can't be used with Mobilinc Connect.  Read where users are accessing their ISY from anywhere using their cell or tablet using just the Portal Module, is this correct?  Also the same thing with Mobilinc and Connect?

The functions of ISY that I would like to have control of remotely are:

1. Insteon device control

2. Temp

3. Video from Insteon HD camera.

I seem to be missing a link in my understanding so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Storm,

I'm Wes, creater of MobiLinc, and wanted to pop in and answer your questions.

MobiLinc Connect is our portal service for the ISY tailored for MobiLinc users. It not only supports anywhere access to the ISY, but also features like push notifications, Today View, Apple Watch, and more for iOS users. For all iOS/Android users, MobiLinc Connect also fully supports Alexa, Google Home/Google Assistant and IFTTT Maker integration.

With MobiLinc Pro, MobiLinc HD, or Orchestrated MobiLinc, you can see/status/control your INSTEON, Z-Wave, and X-10 items including thermostats. Our apps on iOS also offer an IP Camera plug-in that supports thousands of models of camera including the INSTEON HD Camera.

If you have any other questions, you can reach us directly at: support@mobilinc.com

The Mobilinc Connect certainly seems to be a very good option. The other option of ISY Portal also works and offers different features.

Re camera video, I have been in contact with Wes past few days because I do not get my Foscam cameras to work in the Mobilinc App, when I am outside of my wifi network. Wes seems to think that this is because my phone uses TMobile. However, I also have the App IPCamViewer Pro and that App lets me see my 6 Foscam cameras both at home and elsewhere. As such I am not sure that TMobile is the issue.

Generally I am very happy with the Mobilinc App. I have used it with and without ISY Portal. I am just not sure that, in my case, it was worth the extra money for the camera feature.

asbril,

We're off topic from Storm's concerns, but to address the camera issue, T-Mobile definitely stopped support IPV4 IP addresses about a year ago when on cellular, which is why the way you have the cameras setup in MobiLinc won't work when on cell and on T-Mobile/externally. You can quickly test this to confirm it's a T-Mobile issue, by logging into an external Wi-Fi source and confirm you can stream your cameras externally when on an external Wi-Fi, but not the T-Mobile network.

Send me a screenshot of how you have the other app configured and a screenshot of the camera working when on T-Mobile so I can compare both setups to support@mobilinc.com

Wes

I sent you screenshot of the IPCameraViewerPro APP.

This is what I did with my phone connectionI

(1)  connected to TMobile only (no wifi)

IPCamViewerPro works

Mobilinc does not work

(2) connected to my own wifi

both work

(3) connected to neighbor's open xfinity wifi

both work

In other words, you may be right about a TMobile issue, but that is not an issue for IPCamViewerPro.

  • 2 months later...

I have had my isy + alexa + and mobilinc working for months now.  The other night alexa voice commands will no longer work.  Alexa cannot find my programs to run.  Example: "alexa, tell mobilinc to run program bed."  Alexa response, "cannot find program bed, run which program?"

Nothing to my knowledge has changed to cause the issue.  I have disabled and reenabled the mobilinc skills for Alexa, did not fix issue.  Also have rebooted Alexa and did not fix issue.  When reenabling the mobilinc skill, alexa did find all my programs but voice commands do not work.

I am also getting about 20 mobilinc support emails a day saying "no items to sync with alexa smart home."

Any help or ideas?

Clifton

Hi Clifton, I responded to your support email request, reproduced here for anyone else seeing the same issue.

I looked up your account and see that no spoken names have been synced to MobiLinc Connect yet. Some suggestions:

- Verify that your Admin Console->Help->About is reporting the same version 4.6.2 for both the UI and firmware.

- If not, update here: https://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/22000-release-462-is-now-official/

- Once updated, set your Spoken names on your devices and scenes and create a "voice" folder under My Programs and save.

- Verify you have both the "MobiLinc" and "MobiLinc Smart Home" skills linked.

- Say "Alexa, tell moby-link to refresh devices"

- Alexa will say she is syncing with your ISY. At the end you'll receive an email confirmation from MobiLinc Connect with the total number of items found.

- Then say "Alexa, discover devices".

- This will inform Amazon what items should be controlled by your Alexa/Smart Home.
