apostolakisl Posted December 24, 2017 Share Posted December 24, 2017 OK, nothing to do with ISY or insteon at all here. I'm just at a loss and don't know where to go. I have a PC running Windows 10. It keeps making the bodoboop noise of a new device being added/removed even though nothing is going on. I checked device manager and sure enough, every bodoboop noise is accompanied by a refresh of the device manager screen. But nothing changes. The same exact devices are listed and nothing has an error symbol in front of it. Nothing is plugged into any of the usb ports. Everything seems to work. Any ideas? Link to comment
paulbates Posted December 24, 2017 Share Posted December 24, 2017 I notice it infrequently as well. Mine is the notification sound, but, no notification in the notification area. It seems to be a new "feature" and appeared in one of the big updates in the last month or two.. and has happened for me across three brand/models of varying ages. Its not been annoying enough, yet..., to dig into the logs and see what it its. Paul Link to comment

It might go 10 minutes quiet, then it might do it 5 or 10 times in a row. Can you direct to me where there is a log of which device Windows is adding/removing? Link to comment

Pick computer management. Expand event viewer Expand windows logs From there you have to pick through several sources of logs. I would start with System Having said that, I just poked through mine and I'm getting frequent warnings for BT USB... making me wonder it peoples phones BTUSB features are trying to connect to the computer. Going to login as admin on our main family computer and shut BT down as we don't use it, see if it goes away Paul Link to comment

I am sitting here listening to the computer go bodoboop over and over and none of the logs is adding anything to the list. Link to comment

My familyroom computer was set to provide notifications when devices want to connect via BT, I unchecked it now. I'll see what happens, but I only notice every few days. And that is because it is not on the same network as the domain controller at present. Link to comment

For one thing, the device manager isn't making the sounds at the same time as the errors in the log. Also, every business person in the world who takes their laptop off the home network would be up in arms with all the bododoop noises. Link to comment

It showed me that every time I heard the beeedooboop noise, the fingerprint sensor updated its time. So, I disabled the ifngerprint sensor and now sweet silence. Link to comment

The computer is 16 years old and it shipped with XP. It is just a matter of finding a driver that is compaitble with Win10. Or just leaving it disabled. I never used the fingerprint sensor anyway. I have 3 of these old HP laptops all running Win10, so I should be able to just copy the driver off of one of those, or not. The real issue on this for me is how hard it was to figure it out. I guess I blame MS for that. This sort of issue shouldn't be so hard to figure out. Link to comment

Now, like the iphone, I have to go in and had turn off notifications from apps that are telling me things I didn't ask about, including windows features. Its been a while, but I remember turning of things that popped up "did you know?", or "you haven't set up xxx yet!" The concept is good, the execution can suck at times. Paul Link to comment
larryllix Posted January 19, 2018 Share Posted January 19, 2018 Yeah, on my media PC it was either scrap the motherboard that was 5 years old because they would not support the video card section, or go back to Win 7 where it started from and has played XBMC / Kodi just fine since it's birth. Thinking that my 4 core 2.8GHz motherboard wasn't out of date, it made me realise that since MS is in the hardware sales game now and may have an agenda in making hardware unsupported. All the constant upgrades in their pester-ware makes me nervous now. Very strange that suddenly after how many years? Win 7 needs all these upgrades, right up until things are obsolete. My son tells his story about the third party (under $10) mini iPad charging cable working just fine for years. With the new O/S upgrade Apple put out, suddenly the USB / Lightning cable wasn't compatible anymore. A new genuine Apple cable was $40+. Link to comment

Trouble is the security updates don't come by themselves. Sure thing but now MS labels 95% of their updates a security issues. Since the whole O/S has been fully replaced over 4-5 times you have to wonder if their original code had invites to hacking groups in the code with an open door policy. Link to comment

Going to get the USBDeview utility now. I don't quite understand it. I have 3 of those exact notebooks. Great notebook I have to say. They are more than 15 years old and work damn near as well as my latest and greatest (except the batteries are crap). Anyway, the part I don't get is that the other 2 don't have this issue and they all are the same. Perhaps there is something wrong with the hardware? Might not have anything to do with Windows.
