I'm working with an 8-button insteon keypad... is there a way to 'detach' the load from button A - and instead have the load contolled by other insteon devices in the network?

The load needs to see 110v.  You could use an In line Dimmer Switch to supply the voltage, and cap off the load wire on the KPL which would free up the button.

I believe the answer is NO.  Button A will control the attached load and there is nothing you can do about that.  Depending on your needs, you could set the ON level to zero, but it would still be controlling the load.
