How do i track down a communication problem?

Hi,

My setup has been working well for - years.  I am having all sorts of communication problems & I cant figure out why.

I replaced my PLM, moved everything around & I am still having issues.

Some of the switches seem to be flashing often (communication traffic i think).  I have done a restore PLM, Restore Devices, all sorts of stuff.

Can someone help me start a good process to see what the heck is going on?  Should I turn off breakers?  I am really confused on what has changed.

I have UPS's with filterlincs, filters everywhere - a TON of devices (maybe to many).

Help!!

Thanks,

Rich

Thanks, my new 32gb card came today.  How do i swap that in?  Could the card be the issue?

I do have a device which the LED is flashing  - though that looks like communications to me but what do i know?

Factory reset the device and then restore from admin console usually fixes that.

ISY cannot flash LEDs. Insteon cannot transmit that fast.

Look in the wiki for a short instructions to rebuild your card. It's very easy.

If the LED on a module. Blink on traffic could be seeing power line communications or there is noise on the power line causing it to flash. If the LED flashes when you use the modules local switch. Like on a Switchlinc. One of the modules it is a controller for may not be responding back.

This is from the Wiki and it says 16GB  is the largest SD card that can be used. Last Users manual also covers the SD Card replacement.

Hi Rich,

In the link I provided calls out a tiered approach in which I would normally follow. Going through each item costs you nothing but time and going full out to replace a Micro SD card that may be fine is / should be one of the last steps. Please go through the list and confirm each step and if you get hung up or see odd results please do let us all know.

I bought two more lamplinc dimmers - do i need to add them to the ISY for them to help with traffic reliability or can they just be plugged in & not added to the ISY?

I figured they were better than just the access point since i could use them in the future if needed.

Good choice, and no you don't need to add them if you are not going to use them. But, it only makes sense to add them so you can at least track their presence and installation history. If you want to bolster Insteon communications follow the full users manual to confirm the 4 tap beacon test.

This will confirm both sides of the split single phase electrical system is properly bridged / coupled.

One other question - my ISY programs.  I am working on deleting some older devices I am not using anymore.  My ISY programs page shows a lot of 'not loaded' out of memory?

You'll need to go into each program and remove the reference to that hardware you removed. Once done all of those error messages will go away and than you can make a backup of your system.

I am getting a bunch of flashing green which I am taking to think it is insteon communications.

I am starting to wonder if my issues are related from going from 4.7 to 5 and I'm debating rolling back the firmware.

All of my programs have disappeared which were functional up until the other day.

I don't know if that means it's my SD card or what else that could possibly be.

I bought a add on card for Z-Wave and was planning to install it maybe I should install the card installed the new SD card and try to restore?

Hi Rich,

From the Admin Console select a switch and choose *Options*. If you have LED on TX enabled as seen in this image capture please uncheck it for all switches in the home. Once done please confirm if the *Green* flashes have gone away. I would not install anything else or do anything to the Micro SD card until you identify root cause. As this will add more stress and headache to you trying to find out what is happening.

Have you confirmed that your Insteon network is correctly coupled / bridged as outlined by the 4 tap beacon test indicated in the full users manual??

So I rebooted the is why and the entire thing is empty in factory defaulted back to the admin username.

The thing is totally empty and my three most recent backup files apparently are all non-functional.

I was looking to roll back to a backup from 3 days ago and I guess this cause some sort of issue.

So I guess before I fix communication so now need to fix how to restore this. I do have some other backups from earlier 4.x but my firmware is 5.0.16?

Your UI and firmware must match versions.

Hi Rich,

Well, I gather a lazy Sunday has become another day at the office! ? If you intend to roll back to a previous firmware release you of course will need to follow all the steps as to firmware updating. As noted by Larry download the correct 4.XX firmware, Admin Console / Launcher, and clear out the Java Cache. From there you can reload your 994 Series Controller from a good known working back up.

I don't know what time it is where you are but suggest you do the following if you're hard set in doing this today. Go get something to eat and drink. Go to the washroom and do your business and freshen up. Grab a tall glass of your favorite beverage and buckle up and follow all the steps outlined for that 4.XX firmware.

Let us know what happens and keep in mind you can always create a Service Request for UDI to assist you this week.

Hi,. Is the mismatch firmware and UI that is causing the problem?

I found another backup from February that I restored so I am sort of back online.

How do I update the UI?

Hi Rich,

Just go to the same thread where you downloaded 4.XX (firmware) for the Admin Console / Launcher.

Using the same Admin Console will than display that both firmware & UI are the same!
