2420M INSTEON Motion Sensor Problem

I have a couple 2420M motion sensors, one that turns on outside lights and the other my office lights. I cannot prevent them from activating lights when it's light in the day time.

Inside the 2420M that controls the outside lights I have set the dusk/dawn jumper 3 on (the #3 jumper is over both pins). The other jumpers are as follows: Jumper 1 = off; Jumper 2 = on; Jumper 4 = off; Jumper 5 = on. The left dial (countdown) and the right dial (day/night threshold) are both fully counter clockwise.

The 2420M that controls office lights is the same except Jumper 1 = on and Jumper 2 = off.

By the way, I have reset to factory settings and re-configured both 2420Ms. Also for Jumper 3 I either waited the 3.5 minutes or pressed the set button 7 times.

In the ISY99, option settings for Timeout = .5 and LED brightness = 100. For both 2420Ms, I've tried the Darkness Sensitivity at both 0 and 255. At Darkness Sensitivity 255 the dusk/dawn shows ON in My Lighting and the 2420M turns on my lights on even if it's light. At Darkness Sensitivity 0 the dusk/dawn shows OFF in My Lighting and the 2420M also turns on my lights when it's light. I think The Darkness Sensitivity seems to override the jumper...but I'm not sure about that. It also seems to be backwards from the ISY99 instructions (page 69).

How can I get these to not turn on my lights in the day time?

Thanks,

I too have played with the new rev 2.0 ms about a month ago trying to figure out the d/d operation. I use the ISY to program the options and finally settled on a setting of 5 for the d/d in my garage. A setting of 5 resulted in a pretty dark garage before the light would turn on. Setting to 0 or 255 basically seem to disable the d/d operation and the status would stick to which ever level it was at when set. I seem to recall the operation of the d/d settings were the opposite of the wiki too.

One nice benefit is that SH increased the adjustable range of light to dark in the v2.0. Another thing I noticed which I don’t remember in the previous version is that the d/d status will not change while the ms time out is in progress. Once the motion has stopped and the time out ends, then 2-5 minutes later the d/d will change status if it needs to. In other words the light controlled by the ms will not prematurely activate the d/d status.

Try setting the d/d to a setting of 5 and leave the time out at .5 thru the ISY, if the d/d status is off then put them in a drawer and close it for 5 to 10 minutes to see if the d/d changes. If it does (or not) put them in the light where they will not detect any motion for 5-10 minutes. I did this a couple of times just to cycle the d/d status a few times. They have been working great ever since.

Thanks Tim. I tried it on the office 2420M. When I put it in the drawer, the d/d went ON. However when the sun came up it didn't turn OFF. I set it in a very sunny location and it finally turned OFF. However even when it's off, the Sensor continues to turn on the lamp. I noticed that you did the in/out of drawer sequence a few times though...so I'll do that and let you know if it figures things out.

I just thought of something...

I have an ISY99 scene that has the sensor as the controller and the lamp as the responder. I thought a scene is equivalent to setting the connection up manually. Would this cause the 2420M to override the d/d jumper? (No programs or other controllers manage the lamp and the lamp is the only thing the motion detector controls.)

Hi Steve,

No, that wouldn't be it, that is actually how I assumed it was (I know I shouldn't assume). If jumper 3 is making good connection to both pins on the ms and the d/d is showing a status of off, the light shouldn't be turning on. I can only think that the ms are bad, but unlikely, 2 defectives???

It a long shot but try removing jumper 3 then pressing the set button as per the instructions then trip the motion. The put the jumper back on, press the set button then trip the motion again. Then put it back in the drawer until its d/d status changes to on. Then pull it back out into the light and wait for d/d status to change to off. If that doesn't work try factory restore again and restore in isy.

If it still doesn't work right there is one more thing that I would try. Get a good, firm grip on the motion sensor, and as hard as you can, chuck it against a brick wall because I can't think of anything else it might be (or you could try and get an exchange unit, might be a better way than the brick wall thing). Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Oh and remember while you are waiting for the d/d status to change make sure the ms is in a position that it won’t see you because if it trips due to constant motion the d/d will never change status (this minor little detail trip me up for quite a while).

Thanks for the help but I'm having problems with these...

I had new motion detectors sent to me and have the same problem. I think I may not understand how these things work.

The d/d goes on in the dark and off in the light according the the ISY99 console. So it seems that that feature works. However the d/d settings do not prevent the sensor from turning on when it is light when jumper 5 is on both tabs...it's managed by the ISY99.

To re-test this, I did the following to one of the motion detectors:

- I removed all jumpers and reset the MD to factory settings. I put

jumper 3 over both tabs, pressed the set button once, and activated

motion after about 10 seconds. I did not put on any other jumpers. I

changed the nigh/day threshold dial in the MD almost (but not all) the

way counter-clockwise. Since jumper 5 was not on both tabs, I assume

the unit was in manual mode.

RESULT: It worked as I wanted...it prevented the sensor from turning on

in the light.

- I put jumper 5 over both tabs, I assume the unit was now in control

of the ISY99.

RESULT: The sensor immediately turned on.

- I put it into linking mode, opened the options, and set the d/d

to 250 and put it into a drawer for 4-5 minutes.

RESULT: The d/d was on. The sensor went off.

- I took it out of the door and let it set in the light for 4-5 minutes.

RESULT: The sensor went on immediately after taking it out of the

drawer. The d/d remained on.

- I put it into linking mode, opened the options, set the d/d

to 5, and left it set in the light for 4-5 minutes.

RESULT: The d/d changed to off. BUT the sensor continued to go

on with movement.

- I put it into a drawer for 4-5 minutes.

RESULT: The d/d went on. The sensor timed out and went off.

- I pulled it out of the drawer after 4-5 minutes.

RESULT: The sensor immediately turned on when I pulled it from

the drawer. I let it set in the light for 4-5 minutes. The d/d

did not turn off (I assume because motion continued to be detected), so

I put it into a position where it would not detect

motion. The d/d went off after the 4-5 minutes of no motion

detection. The sensor continued to go on with movement.

- I removed jumpers 5 and left jumper 3 over both tabs. I did not put on

any other jumpers. I left the nigh/day threshold dial in the MD at the

setting I started with (almost, but not all, the way counter-clockwise).

RESULT: It worked as I wanted...it prevented the sensor from turning

on in the light.

My conclusion is that the ISY99 does not or is unable to change or control the d/d settings in the motion detector.

Unless anyone has any ideas, I think I will go to manual mode (remove jumper 5 from both tabs) for the d/d setting on the MD.

The Wiki instructions are backwards... towards 0 and the darker it needs to be for the unit to see night.

I'm using the D/D feature solely to turn on lights during daylight low light conditions and have only jumper 2 (which may not be necessary) and jumper 5 on. All boxes are checked and "Timeout =.5," "LED Brightness=0" and "Darkness Sensitivity=165"
