ulrick65 Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 (edited) Just curious is the Z-Matter Dongle for the EISY is a USB 2 or 3 device? I am putting it on an extension cable and the one I have is USB-2. I can't image it needs anything more than that. I don't have any Z-Wave devices yet to test it, so asking here. It is white inside the port, not blue...so assume USB2 but just to be sure. Thanks. Edited October 8, 2023 by ulrick65
glacier991 Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Just bumping this as I have essentially the same question. Can I remotely place the z wave/zigbee dongle using a USB extension cable? It seems intuitively okay. If yes, distance considerations/limitations?
Techman Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Yes, USB 2.0 has a recommended maximum cable lenght of 15 feet. USB 3.x has a shorter recommended length of about 9 feet
Techman Posted January 16 Posted January 16 @ulrick65 The USB ports on the eisy are 3.0, not sure what the Zmatter dongle is. A USB 2.0 cable should be OK.
glacier991 Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Again, thanks....Not seeing much about this... are many people separating the physical eisy box and the dongle? Chris
Techman Posted January 17 Posted January 17 I did, and I know of a few others. It allows you to position the dongle's antennas away from obstructions for better RF coverage. It also eliminates potential strain on the eisy USB port.
ulrick65 Posted January 17 Author Posted January 17 (edited) I use extension cables: The EISY sits in my server rack. The PLM is plugged in at my power panel (a separate receptacle and I have a phase bridge installed) and is connected to the EISY via a 35-foot USB 3.0 cable. The zMatter Dongle is mounted in my basement ceiling at the end of a 16-foot USB 2.0 cable. Everything works perfectly. Thanks. Edited January 17 by ulrick65 1
