KPL No Longer Communicating

v2.8.1

I recently upgraded my PLM to a 2413S.

Everything seemed to work fine but I've now noticed that one of my 2 KPLs (2486S v.36) is no longer communicating. The 2486D v.35 is fine.

I've tried to restore the device several times but it doesn't work.

What else should I try before removing the device completely and reloading it (I really don't want to write all my programs again)?

Here's the restore log:

All the commands issued worked so it is not a physical communication problem with that specific device. However, it did not restore any of the "Controller of" link records necessary for any of the KPL buttons to send messages when a button is pressed. There must be a “Controller of†link record written for each of the five (5) button Groups for a 6 button KPL. Do all the KPL button nodes display under My Lighting? It almost looks like it does not realize this is a KPL or is not restoring the multiple button aspects of this KPL. Are you on 2.7.15?

All the buttons show up under My Lighting.

I do not use the buttons as controllers in any scenes, just in programs so that may be why you don't see them.

The main light can be toggled on/off by the ISY without issue.

I can also adjust the Toggle mode for all the buttons.

However when I click a sub-button, the ISY doesn't see it happen (nothing in the log and my programs don't execute).

The button usage, or the lack of it, does not matter. When a KPL is added as a device the ISY writes the "Controller of" link records, one for each of the KPL button Group numbers (8 for an 8 button KPL, 5 for a 6 button KPL). These link records are necessary for the KPL hardware to send a message when any of the KPL buttons are pressed. Without the link record for each button Group number the KPL does not know what Insteon device address to send the Group On/Off messages to, the ISY PLM in this case.

The need for "Controller of" link records is not unique to the ISY nor a KPL. All Insteon devices that function as a Controller require "Controller of" link records.

I am thinking that something happened when all the link information kept in the ISY had to be updated when the PLM Insteon address was changed. Perhaps someone with more ISY specific experience can chime in with a different suggestion. The only suggestion I have at this point is to Remove and add the KPL back as a new device. Of course if not at 2.7.15 upgrading to the latest firmware is always a good idea. If this was an issue with an older firmware that caused the Controller of link definitions to be lost when the PLM was changed moving to the lastest firmware would not fix the problem, only prevent it from happening again.

Just had a thought, what is displayed if you Show ISY Links Table for that KPL. When I do that for one of my KPLs the Controller of link records (start with E2) are displayed at the very beginning of the link record list, after one Responder to link record (starts with A2) which is also added when the device is added to the ISY. The Responder to link record is there, confirmed during the Restore Event Viewer log you posted.

The single link record the Restore process did verify is the following from the Event Viewer log you posted...

A20013271DFF1F00

is 13.27.1D the old PLM address or the new PLM address. That will indicate if any of the link information in that KPL was updated with the new PLM address. Sorry about asking about ISY firmware level. I finally saw you posted 2.8.1 as the level.

Yea the 13.27.1D is the new PLM.

It's looks like the links table is messed.

The working KPL upstairs has 4 A2s and 5 E2s in it.

The troubled unit has 2 A2s and no E2s.

Looks like I'll have to re-install it from scratch.

The number of A2 responder type link records will vary as it reflects the number of buttons that are defined as responders to devices/scenes. For a 6 button KPL there must be 5 E2 controller link records for the ISY PLM (and therefore the ISY) to be notified when a button is pressed.

Once you add it back it might be worth while doing a Show Device Links Table function to confirm that the KPL did in fact have the required E2 link records written.
