I have a couple of KPL devices and several lamps in a scene. I'm having trouble configuring KPL buttons (as responders of a scene) in order to set the on-level (effectively on/off).

 

For example, I have a "movie mode" KPL button that controls the scene where several lamps dim to 33% with a ramp rate. Additionally, an OutletLinc with a lamp shuts off. So that all works. But, for some reason, I can't add the OutletLinc's KPL button to OFF in the scene. Shouldn't I be able to control any KPL buttons as responders? I need the lamp to shut off and its corresponding KPL button to follow.

 

Another example that I use is "Night Mode." All kinds of things shut off, but I need a KPL button and another device to turn on. I can't seem to figure out how to do this without the use of an additional program.

 

So what am I missing?

OK, so I'll need to correct the situation with a program. Not ideal, but understood.

 

Hypothetically, let me ask, though. If one can set the on-level of other responders, say to 0% when a scene engages, isn't that effectively turning off the device? A LampLinc relay or SwitchLinc relay can be a scene responder, and the on-level is set to something, there is a prompt for Off or On. Can't the scene logic for secondary KPL devices work the same way? I don't think it's a limitation of the KPL, but rather of the scene logic in the ISY.

 

I'm just curious, not trying to beat a dead horse here.

You are correct that setting the On Level to 0% will turn the Responder Off when sending a Scene On. However, as I stated before, the KeypadLinc firmware does not support that option for Secondary buttons. Has been that way since Insteon started many years ago. It is necessary to assign the Secondary KeypadLinc button as a Responder in a Scene and turn the Scene Off.

 

Perhaps in the future SmartLabs will change the way Secondary KeypadLinc buttons respond. Until then using a Scene and turning the Scene Off is the only option.

As a matter of fact, my latest KeypadLinc dimmers and dual-band KeypadLincs both now support turning off in response to an on when set up that way with HouseLinc. My ISY is offline at the moment until I get my new house set up--can someone else look to see if the same holds for programming a scene with the latest ISY firmware?

That would be good news. You are referring to the Secondary buttons, not the primary load control button(s).

I don't know when they announced it, I'm not a registered developer so I don't get the emails they send. I received a PM after posting something similar to your message on the Smarthome forum in December, which prompted me to play with units I had on hand. I think it was FW 38 on the dimmers where it became possible to program a keypad secondary button to turn off in response to an on command.

Thanks Tom. That will sure simplify Secondary button LED management. I checked a v.36 KPL which does not support that feature. Looks like that support came with v.38.

Interesting stuff. Not surprisingly, my KPL's are somewhat dated...

 

I have v.29, v.2D, and v.33. I think I'm out of luck unless I replace them all

Unfortunately that is true. My latest is v.36 which does not have the feature.

But will ISY units support this feature of the KPL's from now on? It seems the logic is already there for relay responders.

The ISY will pick up support for this in a future Beta image. The last beta was 3.1.17 which is now the latest official release. Going on past history a new Beta stream will be started.
