Network traffic and polling

This may be way off. It's just a thought.

May posts I have read lead to a answer of '...the polling would degrade the network with too muc traffic...'

I agree less traffic would definately seem to be better, however what if traffic had priority? I don't even know if its possible, it just popped into my mind as I was reading some posts over lunch.

Setting an importance factor for certain programs might adjust to larger polling times,on less important tasks, when the network has recently been crowded or when there have been a lot of recent errors.

Or if ProgramA (importance level = low) occurs every 1 minute and ProgramB (importance level = medium) occurs every 60 minutes, once an hour when the programs over lap, ProgramB would take precedence. Plus programA would pause, maybe half its normal rate (30seconds) to allow higher priority tasks to take place.

Furthermore if low importance level ProgramA is bumped by ProgamB, maybe its importance level temporarily could adjust to medium, then to medium-high (if it were to be bumped again by Program C) until it final runs and gets back on schedule

Again, This is off the top of my head. I'm not sure it is relevant or even possible.
