The ELK thermostat values are not currently available as variables, we'll have a look and see if we can get them into an upcoming build.

The variables discussed in this thread were substitution variables for e-mail notifications, not program variables. You can certainly use the thermostat values in programs, but there is currently no way of directly using thermostat values in program variables.
