jeff-lines Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 I have had my system since 2007 and haven't got everything working the way I wanted so really haven't done much since then except for an occassional restore device on a keypad when it would seem to forget what it was supposed to do, usually after a storm ... however, my system got to a point where I was unable to do that and I just assumed possibly a bad PLC. I also had several bad switches where it would take multiple taps to get them to work so I decided it was time to do some work. That may be part of the issue, I may have made too many changes at one time. I got six new switchs and a new modem. Before I replaced the modem, I did a backup and upgraded the Java and ISY-99i to 3.2.6 firmware and client. I then started bringing everything back up with the new PLC. For whatever reason, the new PLC failed about five minutes into restoring the backup and the updates going out to the devices. Since I was able to send commands with the old one previously, I did a factory reset on it and the ISY and started over. Everything has come up fine except I am getting communication errors on two out of 12 KeypadLincs when it was restoring the devices. I double checked my APs to make sure they were on different phases (I moved one to get better response to a remote from outside the house). Sure enough, they were on the same phase so I corrected that. I then did a reset on the two Keypadlincs with the issue and tried a restore again. It's probably good to note these two keypads are configured exactly alike in that both control the lights in the main living area from two separate locations. Next I deleted the device from My Lighting, rebooted the ISY, and then added the device back using the New Insteon Device and identifying that it was a 2486D versus letting it autodiscover. It would appear to be communicating, and entries would start to appear ok under My Lighting when it would hit a communication error and then all of the devices for the keypad in My Lighting would show up with the red exclamation mark. When I got the RMA from Smarthome for the modem, I talked to them about the Keypadlincs and they said it was unlikely the two keypads would fail together like that and that I should look to this forum for some help before I ordered replacements. I will say I do have a whole house suppression system that has been in place since I put this system in. Does anyone have any ideas on how I should isolate this?
Brian H Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 There was a known problem with early SwitchLincs. The local push button got intermittent. You could hear them click but they didn't physically make electrical connection. If yours where in the known problem group. Smarthome extended the warranty on them to seven years and was replacing them as users called in. I have a spare that was never used and right from the box. The Off button does not work. While a similar one has been installed since early 2006 and is 100% reliable.
jeff-lines Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 I believe the button problem you are talking about is with Rev 2.1 and 2.9 of the SwitchLincs and that the warrently has been extended to seven years for that ... which I did take advantage of. If there is a problem with KeypadLincs, I'm not following how this would affect linking them up with the ISP. What I couldn't find is an explanation of how to pin down a communication issue (i.e. steps). I did browse this site, but didn't see anything. Any help would be appreciated.
LeeG Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Run Help | About, what is displayed for Firmware and UI levels? Run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer with Level 3 selected. Right click on at least 6 switch nodes in the My Lighting tree, select Diagnostics | Query Insteon Engine. Repeat for some of the old KeypadLincs and then the new KeypadLincs. Post the event trace? Need to know the mix of I1 and I2/i2CS devices. Are all UPS and other electronic devices on the PLM circuit on a FilterLinc? Confirm the PLM is not plugged into a Surge power strip or UPS.
