  1. Thanks nwchicago for a comphrehensive reply. If I might ask for some expanded perspective on General Zwave functionality, You commented about your experience with the ineffectivness in general of Zwave repeaters (other than the Aotec sirens) when building out the coverage of your mesh network. Are not all Zwave devices inherently repeating and therefore contribute to expanded network coverage, at least in theroy ? Or do you have to determine on a device-by-device basis whether or not a given device will also serve as a repeater in addition to its native node functionality (e.g just a motion sensor of also a Z wave repeater)? Elsewhere on this forum, I have seen favorable remarks about the Aotec siren providing good repeater function and thus network range extension. Am I correct to assume that means without enbling the siren function? Given the anticipated widespread distribution of controller Zwave devices in my application, I am trying to aticipate the extent of distributed repeating nodes I might need. Hence the above question regarding device native repeating function. Regarding door locks, I was suprised about your comments regarding the need for door open/close sensors to preclude "bolt extended door slamming" problems. Is this an inherent design flaw in the door lock? I would have presumed that would be an integral function of the doorlock. Also, could you elaborate on your preference for the simplesafe door lock features? Thanks in advance for the favor of sharing your experience. Bill
  2. I am considering adding z wave to my ISY 994i to add support for lighting control using ENERWAVE Z-Wave Plus Dual Relay Module, Hidden Smart Switch, 120-277VAC, 10A Per Relay, ZWN-RSM2-PLUS, Black, 2-Pack (New Version). Can anyone on the forum offer experience, perspective or advice on these devices> they will be addes into a 50+ insteon device setup. Will they "play nice together" via the z wave upgraded ISY 994i? Thanks in advance for the favor of replies. Bill
  3. For anyone desiring to comment, I invite your perspective on the following: I am considering upgrading my ISY 994i to Z-wave capability by purchasing the UDI upgrade add on daughter board dongle and the associated portal subscription. Firstly, I acknowledge this system upgrade will necessitate enduring the pains and vagaries of reworking the configurations of the existing 50+ populated Insteon devices in my system in conjunction with updating the OS to 5.3.0, as extensively cataloged on this forum. The intended objective is to support addition of: 1. One Z-Wave siren (product recommendations and experience with same are hereby solicited) 2. One Z-wave door lock (likely a Schlage or Yale z-wave variety - product recommendations and experience with same are hereby solicited) 3. Implementation of Somfy based motorized shade control by means of a Somfy Z-Wave to RTS Plug-in Interface Wall Module ZRTSI - 1811265 Please provide any relevant comment on experience with this device functionality and reliability in a Z wave network controlled by a UDI ISY 994 z-wave capable controller. I recognize that Z-wave functionality and reliability is highly dependent on local configuration of the Z wave mesh network and number of deployed Z wave devices and that my above described upgrade may be inherently unreliable due to so few added Z wave devices supporting the mesh network, and which therefore require the addition of repeaters/extenders to improve mesh network coverage. So, for those interested in this mental (at this point ) exercise, I would appreciate any/all comments as to whether this upgrade will be worth the trip when judged against the likely effort required to get it all working. I enjoy tinkering by my patience is finite. Thanks in advance to all for any/all comment and advice. I have monitored this forum for several years now and greatly respect the collective knowledge it brings to this technology. Bill
  4. My thanks to Techman, Brian H, and gzahar! From your collective answers, I achieved my objective. In summary, without having to go thru the pain of an upgrade from OS 4.8.0 to 5.3.0, I was able to add needed (but not full functionality) - basic motion detected non dimmable light control of three lights using the insteon 2844-222 Motion detectors "scened" together with 2477SAL devices. I have elected to forego implementing the Insteon siren (2868-222) to avoid having to upgrade the OS above 4.8.0. 5. My ISY 994i is running version 4.8.0. I do not have the Z wave module so there has been no need to update to a later OS version. I purchsed Insteon motion detectors (2844-222) and an insteon siren (2868-222). The ISY will not register these devices. Is a later version of the ISY OS required to integreate theses devices? If so, what is the version required. Where in the UDI WIKI is this documented. Thanks for any assistance.
  6. Hi Gents, I am a relative newbie to the ISY 994, using it to control my insteon household installation and my ELK M1 Gold. My question is the same as the lead post in this thread and I have attempted to follow all the suggestions with little success. The principle problem is one of insufficient understanding of the various steps and a bit of fear that I will unwittingly reconfigure my ISY994 so as to lose access over my local LAN.. My desire is to have remote web access to the ISY 994 dash board via an android phone browser (such as chrome) with reasonable security. From this thread I have gleaned that it is possible using a certificate, an https url for the ISY, port frowarding for the ISY on my router, and my ISY ID and password. I reviewed the referenced "http://www.universal-devices.com/docs/ISY994%20Series%20Network%20Security%20Guide.pdf" and met with considerable confusion on certificate creation so I have not proceeded. I did succeed in reaching the dashboard by configuring the ISY https port to 44X (443 was already in use by another LAN network device) and then connecting using url "https://12.34.56.789:44x (of course using my actual internet IP) . But absent the certificate, the connection rejected the secure connection and required me to bypass the certificate to get to the dashboard.. So I am close but not yet there. What I think might help is a bit more step-by-step set of instructions through the certificate self-signed creation process. Also I am confused as to how to use certificates with an android browser, having read that this is not available. So I come to the gurus for guidance, assistance or pointers to tutorials or threads on this or other forums Thanks in advance for any and all assistance Bill
