Using LampLinc as ApplianceLinc

Does anyone see any drawbacks using a LampLinc as an ApplianceLinc for low power draw appliances, such as a floor fan? With setting the LampLinc on level at 100 and ramp rate at 0.1s, I don't believe it would be a problem.

What do you think?

All Insteon dimmers chop a portion of the AC Sine wave even at 100% On. An appliance that is not rated for dimming can be damaged including the Insteon device itself.

EDIT: I ran a small squirrel cage fireplace blower for somewhere around 3 years before the wired ICON Dimmer quit working. Usage was of course seasonal.

I will echo LeeG's thoughts.

May not be a good idea. As even at 100% the AC output is modified.

Each device being controlled may act different than another device.

Some may work.

Some may just refuse to work.

Some may look like they are working but fail with a shorter than normal lifetime.

I know someone that ran a small AC wall wart on an X10 Socket Rocket that doesn't dim but uses a triac {dimming component in a LampLinc} always On at 100%.

Worked for about a year and one day they noticed the case was melting.

I have had Lamplincs on fixed brightness CFL lamps (rumored to also be a no no) for about 3 years or so until they were changed to LED. Didn't have any issues as of yet. Buy the extended warranty

Tried a cfl bulb (40w equivalent) on a lamplinc and it kept going on and off on its own. Didn't let it go on and didn't try with different wattage. Just went back to incandescent. What's the big deal spending a few cents more per month on electricity when I spent $30+ on a lamplinc, not to mention several thousand and countless hours of my time (instead of earning more money by doing OT at work) on home automation?

Thanks to everyone for the input. I was hoping to take advantage of the dual band capabilities of the LampLinc.

I’ll go the safe route and order more ApplianceLincs.

Or wait for the right ones to be dual band. It might not be long, who knows...
