osurh18 Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Ok I just switched out a 6 button keypdad switch to a 6 button keypad dimmer. I logged into my ISY99 using the universal-devices.com/99i and username and password. From there I removed all of the old scenes and device from the switch. I was using it with a fanlinc and I an using the new dimmer with the fanlinc as well. I then created 5 new scenes (Fan High, Med, Low, Off, Light) and add the Keypad button as the controller and the fanlinc as the responder for each. I also set the proper fanlinc speed for each scene. Seemed to work flawlessly. However when I physically any of the 4 Keypad Fan buttons the fan turns on high. When I turn on the scene from my Admin Console it works perfectly HELP?!?

LeeG Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 In Insteon each Controller of the Scene has a unique set of Responder values. When using the Scene name itself works (where the PLM is the Controller) and pressing a KPL button does not yield the desired result the KPL button as a Controller has not had its Responder values set. Click on the Red KPL button node name listed below the Scene name. A set of Responder values will be displayed that apply when the KPL button is pressed. Set those values as needed. I assume the Red load wire of the KPL has been capped and the FanLinc Light node is being controlled because ON/OFF buttons have been defined as a Controller of the FanLinc Light node. If this is the definition the ON/OFF buttons should have control over the FanLinc Light node functions of Dim and Bright.

I am using the KPL as the controller and the fan linc as the responder. I feel like I must be missing something simple
LeeG Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer at LEVEL 3. Press the ON button to turn the FanLinc Light. Press and HOLD the OFF button for a few seconds which would normally reduce the FanLinc Light Level. Press and HOLD the ON button for a few seconds which would normally increase the FanLinc Light level. Post the event trace so we can see the commands issued when the ON button is pressed and held for a few seconds and the same with the OFF button. The commands issued by a KPL Relay and a KPL Dimmer controlling a responder should be exactly the same. Of course the load control circuitry would work differently but the Red wire is capped. Not sure what is happening here since the commands would be that same.

A single message is sent on the powerline which can be recognized by multiple linked devices. No individual device can ACK the message because several devices could be reacting to the same Dim/Bright message. It is not possible for ACKs and retries with this sequence as the button Press/Hold/Release is very time sensitive. If Dim/Bright messages were ACKed and retried for each linked Responder the reaction of each Responder would be unpredictable. A simple On/Off message sequence is made up of several messages, one of which is sent specifically to every linked device. If the device does not respond to that message the Controller device retries several times. The net of it is a Dim/Bright message is a single attempt with no ACKs. An On/Off message sequence is made up of multiple messages which are retried if no ACK is received. I suspect the communication between the KPL location and the FanLinc location is not as reliable as it needs to be. On/Off works because there are ACKs and multiple retries. The single message associated with a Start Manual Change (Up/Down) is not reliable enough to get the FanLinc to react.

The most common methods are: a) ensure you have communication between legs of your electrical system. This is typically assured by using two dual-band devices and verifying on opposite legs via the process described in the user manual identification and elimination of devices which interfere (either actively or passively) with insteon communication. There is no easy way to do this. First is to identify suspect problem-causers. Unplug suspects and see if communication improves (if so, filter that device). Initially, consider computer equipment, including UPS and surge suppressors, TVs and AV equipment. c) addition of insteon devices, to repeat signals to distant locations. d) reading of prior posts on this forum to learn the various methods and ideas.
