Mobilinc Pro

I searched this board for current info on Mobilinc Pro and cannot find anything. Anyway, I bought the app without realizing that it also uses a Mobilinc Connect and you have to pay a monthly access fee (either my info was incomplete or I didn't read enough to understand this). I don't use it very often so I don't want to pay a monthly fee.

 

My question is, are most of you paying the monthly access fee ($5) for Mobilinc Connect or have you set up Mobilinc using the "Manual Port Forward" process? If the latter, how is it working? And is it difficult to set up?

I use mobilinc without mobilinc connect. I just forward the ports on my router and use dyndns (many other companies out there) so that I can type in a specific web link that forwards to me ip address (DNS forwarding service). Port forwarding isn't that hard and it's good to learn how to do it since you may have to do it for other things. It can be confusing at first but there are plenty of resources out on the web and you'll find this community here is very helpful for questions.

Yeup, the Mobilinc Connect is a service for those who do not want to mess with their router settings. The actual task is easy if you've done it before. As the above poster mentioned, it is something worth learning.

 

 

As for the actual use, Mobilinc does a great job of it. You end up getting 2 AP routes. One is Local for when you are on your WiFi. The other uses a secure connection. The mobilinc seams to prefer the Local first, and then swaps over to the secure if it can't connect.

 

In practice, you can really only tell that you are local / secure by the icon in the top right changing between an L and an S. When on secure we have noticed it is a bit slower to respond, but considering the additional layers this can be expected.

Egg on my face. I didn't even know there was an alternative to paying the yearly fee. I'm sure if I simply look on this section of the forum I'll find how to do it lol

I use Mobilinc Pro without the Connect service. I also don't do port forwarding. Both are for the same reason. I don't want the central controller for my house exposed to the internet. Using the Connect service is safer since the ISY software isn't directly accessible from the internet (outbound channel vs always open inbound) but still if the Connect service gets hacked I'm toast. I don't yet have my home security system integrated with my ISY yet but that will happen over the holiday break when I have more time. Definitely wouldn't want my security system compromised via an open channel to the internet.

 

Both Android and iOS have a VPN client built into the phone. I always make sure to buy a router for my house that has VPN capabilities. I can create a secure VPN from my phone to my home router and run the Mobilinc app to avoid the security issues and monthly cost of Connect. I can also do VPN from my laptop from anywhere to access the ISY.

 

I haven't yet had the need to do something at the house while away but I'm sure I will eventually.

I haven't tried it (I port forward myself) but one nice thing of Mobilinc Connect is it supports iOS push notifications which can be a nice way to get notices from various things in your house. There are of course lots of other ways to get notifications on your phone like using email or email to text gateway direct from ISY.

I use Prowl for notifications from ISY. The app is $2.99, but no monthly fees.

You can then send direct messages via Networking Resources, or via email.
