I have been using the 99i since it was first introduced. It has performed flawlessly, and I do not anticipate any programming beyond its capability. Are there any compelling reasons to upgrade to the 994i, other than the fact that the 99i is no longer supported with upgrades?

The main issue you may run into eventually is many (most?) newer Insteon devices require firmware 4.x and later, and this will not run on the 99i.

 

The common catch seems to be the KPLs - if you have to get one replaced, you will likely find the replacement will not work.
