JanetWireless Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 We have a bunch of insteon in the house. A lot was installed about a year ago, we are installing some new devices at this time. We are having problems getting keys for keypads (dimming and non dimming) to show on the ISY. Normally we install them and voila the keys show. For one device, the keys never showed up. For another device, the keys showed for a year. We manually programmed one of the keys to control a responder (manually as the laptop was not at the house that day to do it with the software) and it successfully worked. But the next day when the laptop was back in the house the ISY could not see the buttons of the keypad. How can we get these buttons to show up?
oberkc Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 My experience is that the separate buttons always show up when I add a keypad to the ISY. There is a little + besides the device. When selected, the list expands to show the additional buttons. How do you add devices? Do you go to linking mode in the ISY, then put the keypad in linking mode? What version of ISY software are you using and how new are the keypads?
Brian H Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 ISY99i or the later ISY994i? The latest KPLs are too new for the last avilable firmware for the ISY99i to support.
JanetWireless Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 Oberkc - yup, that worked for most of them. Install and the buttons show up. With the little + or - depending if they are expanded or not. One never did from day one. The other one did until we added a key as a controller manually and it seemed to disappear after that (maybe for another reason, but about that timeframe). They now don't show a + - . We have tried factory resets. We have tried to manually add in a button hoping that would trigger something in the isy. We tried a disable, enable from the isy. Nothing helped get those buttons back at the isy. Brian, we have the isy99i - bought about 1.5 years ago (give or take 1/2 year). It was the most recent model available at that time. We have not upgraded the isy firmware ever (we will put that on our to do soon list). But all these keypads are older ones, that were bought at the time as the isy (within a few weeks). They keypads start with 19.2C... if that helps date them. We also have not upgraded the firmware on the keypads ever (we will look at doing that soon also). But any reason we should be losing these buttons on these keypads in the ISY software? We have another 5 five keypads, again bought at the same timeframe, that have no problems so far. Oh, FYI, we have both 8 button and 5/6 button keypads, I don't think this is causing the problem.
oberkc Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 If all the devices once worked, but now don't, I have no explanation. I have no recollection of any reports of devices once working now not. When you perform a factory reset on a device, then try adding it back to the ISY, have you ever watched the event viewer for signs of errors? You will only be able to update the ISY software to version 3.3.10. If you haven't done so, it is worth trying, but I don't imagine that this is the source of your problems if your devices are also older. There is no upgrading insteon device firmware.
JanetWireless Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 Thanks. I didn't know about the error file, I will go look at that. When we perform the factory reset, it does not lose the info on the isy about the keypad (still keeps name etc.). It took us a couple of tries to reset the insteon inline linc dimmers (that double tap has to be very quick), so maybe we are missing the timing somehow on the keypads. We will go back and try to factory reset them again. I am guessing if the name we gave it is still showing on the isy, we might not be getting the factory reset to really work. The instructions we have from the Insteon owner's manual for keypads is: 1) Pull Set button out (creating an Air Gap) 2) Wait 10 Seconds [????Question, hold set button out 10 seconds, or just pull it out, let it go, then wait 10 seconds????] 3) Push Set Button in and Hold it in KeypadLinc will (Beep) 4) Release the Set button Device’s embedded software will re-write all settings to factory defaults A couple of seconds will pass KeypadLinc will (Beep)-(Beep) LEDs will return to normal brightness KeypadLinc returns to Ready Mode Connected load will turn on And we will do the upgrade of the firmware, just in case.
oberkc Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 In addition to the factory reset, you should delete the device from the ISY, then re-add. I believe the best way to add the device is to use the "start linking" button, putting the ISY into linking mode, letting the ISY automatically detect the device. Then put the keypad into linking mode. If all works well, the device should immediately show up on the ISY.
