Question about the ApplianceLinc V2 #2456S3

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have just bought some INSTEON's devices for test, recently.. Got encountered some problem, not yet cleared, about few days already.. Hope you guys can help..

- Is the INSTEON's ApplianceLinc V2 #2456S3 have a valid INSTEON ID ( XX : XX : XX) ??

- I'm trying to link this On/Off appliance module with my PowerLinc Modem, 2413U, with the home automation software, HL INSTEON v2.10.25. But not able to get this appliance's Insteon ID. So I couldn't on off this module through the software..

ps: attached with the photos of the INSTEON's ApplianceLinc V2 #2456S3 and also INSTEON PowerLinc Modem, 2413U.

Yes it should have a six digit ID sticker on it. It looks like yours has fallen off. Most of my old 2456S3 v1.3 ApplianceLincs have also lost there stickers. Most likely the glue on them has failed.

Your 2456S3 v1.3 ApplianceLincs are fairly old. Looks like week 35 of 2006. Mine are also in that date range.

I just tried my test Houselinc program with a spare 2456S3 v1.3 ApplianceLinc and a 2413S PLM.

The set button method did find and add it to the HouseLinc program.

If yours is not finding it with the Set Button method. You may have a communications problem. Maybe try the 2456S3 in a different location.

Is your 2413U PLM in the outlet, surge strip or UPS power the computing equipment is on?

Those types of devices can cause communications issues for the PLM if they are on the same circuit.

If you need the full users manual for the 2456S3 ApplianceLinc. It is for the later 4.? modules but mostly correct for the older 1.? models

http://www.insteon.com/pdf/2456S.pdf

The information on page 7 on Local Control is not accurate for the v1.3 2456S3 modules.

It defaulted to Local Control On and was tied to adding a X10 Primary Address with an On or Off command.

Hi Brian H,

Many thanks of your kind reply! After I changed to another location, I still not able to link my ApplianceLinc V2 #2456S3.. I think it might be due to I use a transformer, convert the VAC 220 to VAC 110.. So it might affect the INSTEON's signal.. I will figure out later.. Do you know what's the difference of PowerLinc Controller (PLC) and PowerLinc Modem (PLM).

Good chance it is the transformer blocking the power line signals.

One other important issue.

If you countries power is 50 cycles and not 60 cycles. The 2456S3 will not work even if you step the power down from 220 to 120 volts.

The 2456S3 uses the power line frequency for signal timing. The 50 cycles will cause it to be timed completely wrong.

The 2413 series PLMs are also strictly 120 volt 60 cycle devices.

Hi Brian,

Oh.. Just realized my country's AC frequency is 50Hz.. No wonder it can't work. Thank for you let me know that.. Luckily I able to use my PLM 2413U to control a INSTEON bulb, although It's not that stable. I will find UK's standard to test it out. But I have search the PowerLinc Modem, currently the latest one are 2413U and 2413S. Both of this just support 120VAC with 60Hz only. If I want to develop system with INSTEON's devices and control through PC base, is that got other alternative or not?

Thank you of your reply again...

You may want to check out the International Products page for some ideas.

http://www.insteon.com/global-products.html

Yes we have been asking for International versions of the PLM but so far it has shown no results. The HUB can be used on 50 or 60 cycles and is one of the modules that can be bought for different regions of the world.

One thing is the RF frequency in other countries is different due to regulations. So using an RF US device and a UK RF device would not work. Using all the same regions modules would be OK.

Hi Brian,

I got another one question still not 100% clear. Not sure you know the detail specification or not.. I have put a link a below..

http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg5 ... aphics.jpg

I understand that the frequency of my power source here is 50 Hz.. However if I used whole the devices / appliances at here one are Dual-band, then even though the power line signal timing is completely wrong (that's is why 2456S3 can't work), the RF band will work. Isn't it?

The power line signals from the PLM will definitely not get through the converter in your link. So RF maybe the only signal path.

Depending on the exact frequency and waveform on the 120 volt outlet. It may not even work if the signal is not a good sine wave or 60 cycles.

Remember the 2456S3 is strictly power line signals.

I see you posted while I was also posting.

I will give the diagram you posted a look and reply again.

The 2413U PLM is 120 volts 60 cycles only.

The 2457D2 LampLinc is 120 volts 60 cycles only.

The 2635-222 On/Off Module is 120 volts 50/60 cycles.

The 2672-222 LED Bulb is 120 volts 60 cycles only.

In your diagram only the 2635-222 can be run on the step down transformer at 50 cycles.

Modules made for 60 cycles only. May have power supply issues on 50 cycles.

If you decide to try a converter. Make sure it has enough power to run the modules correctly and has a clean enough output to not effect the modules.

Some may have a modified sine wave that may not work correctly and not a pure sine wave that should work.

Also RF communications maybe limited distance wise. The US RF frequency may not be legal in your country and may interfere with some other RF service.

From what I have found out. The power line frequency is still used to time the RF signals.

Hi Brian,

I see, noted...

From what I have found out. The power line frequency is still used to time the RF signals. <= Currently I use this step down transformer is able to on / off the 2672-222 LED Bulb through the 2413U PLM, but it's not that stable.. And also able to pairing / linking but also not that stable. These all commands, sometimes can work, sometimes cannot work.. So this make me a doubt that whether what you mean. (The power line frequency is still used to time the RF signals.)

thank you :)

Correct. The 2413U/S only do X10 Power Line signals.

They do not process the US 310MHz X10 RF commands. Only the 915MHz US Insteon RF Commands.

If your X10 RF devices are not for US use. They may not be on the 310MHz frequency but on the International X10 RF Frequency of 433.92MHz.

The International Insteon RF frequencies are also different. Depending on the area of the world. They where designed for.

The 2413U,2457D2,2672-222 are all designed to work on 120 Volts 60 Cycles.

Running them on 120 volts 50 cycles may cause unwanted problems as their power supplies are not made for 50 Cycles.

The Insteon RF Frequency here is 915MHz.

The allowed RF frequency in your country maybe different and you maybe getting interference from another RF source.

The Insteon RF distance varies. Depending on what maybe between the devices.

You may want to try the modules right next to the 2413U PLM. So you know you have a good RF signal and see how reliable they are.

Have you given any more thought to using the International versions?

Hi Brian,

You may want to try the modules right next to the 2413U PLM. So you know you have a good RF signal and see how reliable they are. <= yah, currently I'm developing this way currently..

Have you given any more thought to using the International versions? <= Actually I help other people is U.S. to develop software application, so at last the system still use in US. So that is why I didn't consider on International versions.. Other than that, if I buy buy UK version INSTEON appliances (50 Hz), the voltage range is 230 VAC, but the 2413U PLM's voltage is still 110 VAC. It's quite troublesome for me also...

Thousand thanks to let me know yah!

Hi Brian,

Actually I bought a stepdown transformer with frequency converter functionality (230VAC 50Hz => 120VAC 60Hz ) and test my PLM 2413 series modem (usb and serial) with the software, HouseLinc Insteon. I try to send the on / off command to my 2672-222 bulb through the Modem, but the stability still not that stable. It's sometimes can work sometimes cannot work. Both the PLM 2413 and the bulb are connect to the output from that transformer. Is that the RF influence or the output sine wave got problem from the stepdown transformer?

I saw you post on the Smarthome Forums. Insteon section.

If the converters output is not a clean 120 volts 60 cycles pure sine wave. You may have problems.

The 60 cycle sine wave is used for Zero Crossing Detection and signal timing. If it is dirty or not a good sine wave. Timing and Zero Crossing detection maybe effected.

The 2672-222 bulb is also on the 120 volts 60 cycle converter?

I take it your bulbs is not the recently updated model with a 100-240 volt 60 cycle power and a higher Lumens Output.

Hi Brian,

Sorry of the late reply..

Actually both my PLM and 2472-222 bulb plug into the 120VAC 60Hz outlet (convert from 230VAC 50Hz).

I have tested the power consumption of this bulb, it did take about 9 to 10 Watts

I think, the converters output is not a clean 120 volts 60 cycles pure sine wave. Then it caused the stability issues. So I have to work out with the colleague in U.S. to continue the development.

Hi Brian,

Have you developed the insteon with powerLinc Modem (such as 2413S) before? Do you have any example codes, or insteon protocols or detail explanation to list the all the devices in insteon power line and RF network? And also the example of add / remove the devices?

I do belong to the Insteon Developers Group but have done no development with software or controllers.

I was more interested in the hardware side of the protocol.

I don't remember if I gave you this link before. It has great information on Insteon. There is a link on that page for the older revision 2412S PLM Developers Guide. The same basic commands are also in the 2413S PLM.

I have seen u have recommended this link to other developer before. Thank u very much :)

I felt that they don't have a real standard yet after I study through their documentation pdf, INSTEON_Developers_Guide_20090218.pdf.

Still R & D much on these...
