algod Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I was planning to use this module in an outdoor floodlight, however I live in the Boston area. The specs list the operating temperature from 32 to 104 farenheit. What do I do in the winter, or on a hot August night? Has anyone had success in a cold or hot enviorment? If installed, what should my expectation be? Thanks, Al
shannong Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 It's worth noting that it's against electrical codes in most states to use a device outside it's intended use or beyond it operating thresholds. Do you have a switch inside the house or garage for this light? If so, you could mount it in that box. That's what most folks do vs. mounting it outside in the light box. I wouldn't expect the cold to affect it as long as it doesn't have collected moisture on it to freeze. Do you really expect it to get above 104F in Boston?
algod Posted April 23, 2014 Author Posted April 23, 2014 I didn't want a switch. I would control the module with my ISY. I do have a recepticle on the second floor that is in a built in cabinet. I could run a jumper from the recepticle to a junction box, and wire the on/off module from there. By the way, it's the below 32 degrees that concerned me. Above 104 I could put a mini fan in the floodlight housing to keep the module cool. (only kidding) Thanks, Al
Xathros Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 104F is not that far fetched inside an electrical junction box exposed to the sun. At my previous house, I had an inlinelinc relay installed in an outside Floodlight/motion sensor on my garage for 2-3 years with no problems. Climate here in So. VT is very similar to Boston. I'm quite sure it saw temperatures outside of the specs on both ends many times. -Xathros
