chris87 Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 I am very new to home automation, so I apologize for my lack of knowledge. I currently have an ISY994i. I am using Mobilinc on my iPad. My Insteon network is pretty small right now and consists of the following: 3 2457D2 Lamplincs, a Switchlinc dimmer (RF only/no neutrals), and two 2466SW Togglelincs for a virtual 2-way. The Mobilinc seems to be intermittent. I often have to press the buttons two or three times before the lights actually will turn on. I thought that the Lamplincs would work as phase couplers, but I'm not sure how to tell if that is working. For whatever reason, the ISY cannot see my Toggelinc switches. I tried using the set button on both the master and slave, but it is unable to detect either. Today, I tried adding the Insteon Garage door kit, and that caused all kinds of problems. Now the ISY can't communicate with the other devices. I ended up deleting everything and re-adding the devices manually. The performance appears to be even more inconsistent. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? Is this something to do with phase coupling? Do I need to do something specific with the Lamplincs? Any suggestions on why the Insteon garage kit caused so many complications? I appreciate any input!
stusviews Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 You need to read the LampLinc Owner's for instructions on how to bridge the opposite legs of the split single-phase electric supply. The ToggleLinc's are powerline only and depend on dual-band devices to achieve that coupling. Without coupling, you may experience delays, intermittent or non-operation.
oberkc Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 I must admit that I cannot imagine why ADDING a garage door kit would make things worse. Agree with stusviews about checking out the manual for instructions on coupling. I believe it to be important to positively confirm coupling across the legs of your electrical system. Make sure ISY-994 is not in amongst a bunch of other computer stuff like UPS, surge suppressors, power supplies. Do not plug your PLM directly INTO surge suppressors and UPS. Sync mobilinc each time you make changes to your ISY configuration.
chris87 Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 I did check to make sure the phases are coupled. When I go through the process, the light blinks green, goes back to red for a second, and then blinks green again. The instructions say that it should blink green, but all the outlets seem to flicker red in addition to green. I can't add any of my devices back to the ISY. I keep getting an error message "cannot determine device link table address." My log is below: Sat 09/27/2014 09:29:18 PM : [ 2E 4D FD 1] ERR 1 Sat 09/27/2014 09:29:24 PM : [2E 4D FD 1 ] Start : Removing device from ISY Sat 09/27/2014 09:29:24 PM : [2E 4D FD 1 ] Finish : Removing from ISY was Successful Sat 09/27/2014 09:29:24 PM : [All ] Writing 0 bytes to devices Sat 09/27/2014 09:29:27 PM : Start Insteon Device Linking Mode Sat 09/27/2014 09:29:42 PM : [1F.C7.42 00] Linked device type=01.24 fw=41 Sat 09/27/2014 09:29:42 PM : [1F C7 42 0 ] Added to list of devices to link to ISY Sat 09/27/2014 09:30:02 PM : Stop Insteon Device Linking Mode, Final processing to follow Sat 09/27/2014 09:30:29 PM : [1F C7 42 0 ] Failed to add device, reason 9 Sat 09/27/2014 09:30:30 PM : [All ] Writing 0 bytes to devices Sat 09/27/2014 09:30:30 PM : [All ] Writing 0 bytes to devices

chris87 Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 I seem to have resolved a couple of issues, but I am still having a few problems. One of my circuits was off due to kitchen remodeling. I turned it back on this morning, and it seemed to improve communication. I don't know if that is a coincidence, or if it was interfering with the Insteon signal. I also moved the ISY from my Verizon FIOS router to the switch upstairs. My devices seem to be a lot more reliable. For some reason, though, it will now not detect my Insteon Garage kit. Any ideas on why this would be? I believe that my phases are coupled with the Lamplincs that I have. My Togglelinc switch will also not appear when I launch linking mode. Does this have to be added manually? How do I go about doing that? I appreciate the help.
LeeG Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 With rare exceptions I add all my devices using Link Management | New INSTEON Device. Enter the Insteon address of the I/O Linc, Name of choice, and Auto Discover. Put the I/O Linc into linking mode with the I/O Linc Set button. Click Ok on New INSTEON Device. With comm being in question I would run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer at LEVEL 3. Then run New INSTEON Device. That way if the device does not add the event trace will be available. The ToggleLinc can be added the same way.
chris87 Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 Lee, thank you so much for your help! You have no idea how grateful I am. I have more question if you don't mind. I added my Garage kit, and it seems to work. There is one small issue. When it is off, and I hit on, the garage opens. However, when I want to close the garage, I have to hit the button twice. Basically, I have to turn it off and then back on, and the garage will close. Is there a setting that I need to change?
LeeG Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 The Momentary mode controls the commands the I/O Linc Relay responds to. Momentary B allows the relay to react to both On and Off commands, with either command coming from the button press turning the relay On.
chris87 Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 I actually have it set to Momentary B, but it only seems to respond to On commands. Is there something that I am missing?
LeeG Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Change the setting to Momentary A. After that update is complete, change it back to Momentary B. Momentary B should respond to a Scene On or Scene Off from the button press. What is the Momentary timeout value?
chris87 Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 I tried changing it to A and then back to B. It is still giving me trouble. The momentary hold time is set to 2.0.
LeeG Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 What ISY firmware is being used? Help | About
chris87 Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 The Firmware version is v.4.0.5. The UI is v.4.2.15. I wasn't sure if I should have upgraded to one of the RC versions.
stusviews Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Does the garage door operate correctly with each push of the set button on the I/O Linc or does that, too, require two pushes?

You need to update the Firmware, too, Step 6: http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/14136-release-4215-rc5-is-now-available/
LeeG Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Stu is right on, need to update to 4.2.15. Momentary B is not working as it should. Suggests the ISY is not updating the I/O Linc correctly.
chris87 Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 I upgraded to 4.2.15 with no issues, but I am still having the problem. Do I need to change anything or adjust the settings?

chris87 Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 Does the garage door operate correctly with each push of the set button on the I/O Linc or does that, too, require two pushes? When I use the set button, it works fine. One push for opening and closing.
stusviews Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Which device(s) are you using to control the I/O Linc, for example, I use a KPL button and a Mini remote?
LeeG Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Right click on I/O Linc relay node, click Options at the bottom of the right side, click Query button in the Options popup. Also click Help | About to confirm the update to 4.2.15 was successful.
stusviews Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I have had the ISY incorrectly identify the options for an I/O Linc. If all else fails: Follow the instructions to manually set the I/O Linc to Momentary B or, preferably, install HouseLinc on a Windows computer and use that to set the options. Preferably because HL offers some options for some devices that the ISY doesn't. There is no need to keep HL running, just fire it up as needed. There is the added cost of a PLM and the Windows requirement.
