KPL custom etched buttons

Not really an ISY question but checked with Aartech Canada and they said $24.99 for the custom etched buttons in 6 scene or 8 scene.  Do the buttons on a KPL change individually?  Like can I buy an 8 scene KPL custom etched button pack, and have like 4 of them say LAMP, and 2 "AWAY" or something like that, and then put them in my various KPLs?  Or is it the entire button plate that you are replacing, meaning you'd need to still say you want the top button to say ON, bottom OFF and so on?  Thanks!

BASICS: You will require either a 6 / 8 button kit. This requires a new frame to convert from one to another. You can indicate any phrase so long as it meets the character length listed by Smarthome.

Only use upper case letters as lower case will be hard to see and looks terrible. The custom etched letters are a different color then the OEM letters. Custom lettering is a off gray where as the OEM lettering is green.

This is hard to see as a causal user but a home owner will notice but that goes away in a few weeks. Each key (chicklet) is separate and can be replaced individually. If you're crafty you can modify a (configured) 8 button KPL to use four large or a combination of small keys in a KPL.

Stu has a great picture of him doing this in his environment.

Oh neat idea about the 4 large ones.  That's great and good to know they are separate.  I have 3 KPLs but still figuring out what I want to do with them all, so was hoping I could buy a couple of the 8 scene ones and then just do it like LAMP, LAMP, AWAY, AWAY, AWAY, etc and then mix and match, so that's great thanks!

Before you go the route of the *custom* keys I would humbly suggest you look at the prefab one's. The 25 / 50 kit has some of the most common keys people will use or want.

If there are actual custom things you wish then by all means go ahead. Just that the 25 / 50 key set offers lots of values and this is what covers about 50% of my home because it just works. Anything that could not be done was obviously covered with custom keys for that professional look and ease of use.

I have ordered custom buttons many times and have 4 bags of the 50 button pack.  (Advice, print out the picture of the list of buttons for the 50 button pack that is on the prodcut page.  Each time you use a button, cross it off the list.) Unfortunately one night after spending weeks compiling a list of 8 buttons, I accidentally ordered lowercase buttons.  Big mistake, had to re-order.  The custom buttons do look a little different than the buttons that come with the KLP.  I think they are close in color to the 50 button pack buttons.  I just set up the network module to control a TV from a KPL, POWER ON/OFF and PLAY/PAUSE.  I dont need any other buttons right now so I went with the DIY approach.  Nail polish remover to remove the lettering from the kpl buttons that come with the keypad.  Printed the text on Avery clear labels, I don't recall the correct font and size.  Cut them out and put them on the buttons, covered with a small piece of scotch tape. One of them is not crooked, but a little off center to the right, but both look very good.

Yeah I was looking at those packs but the problem was some of the buttons only include 1 like AWAY when I need 2 or 3 of them so thought might as well just make custom ones, but will see.  Thanks!

Is there going to be another word / phrase included with the AWAY?

Well I was just thinking each entry having one labelled AWAY so when activated things like motion sensors will send notifications if tripped and so on. :)

4-button KPLs

How did you make this work so that the double-wide buttons are in the middle positions?

I snapped large buttons into the middle positions. They do fit. Just remember that both buttons need to be controllers in any scene or program. If you want the only the buttons to be responders to a program, then create a scene that includes only the buttons and control the scene.

Hi

I have all ivory switches. anyone out there used the standard 50 packs on ivory switches , how do they look being white, I have ordered custom ones but I see now they are 49.99 way to much for 8 buttons, I paid 20

I have a Kpl with buttons from the 50 button pack and maybe some custom buttons in a 3 gang box with a light almond (I think) faceplate. The other switches are a switchlinc dimmer and a standard decora paddle. I don't recall if the Kpl is white Orr light almond.

In any case the Kpl looks fine and blends right in.

Yeah, I saw that a few weeks ago and just had to shake my head. I can tell you for a fact they sold more at the $20.XX price point in one month than at that stupid and insane $49.XX!

I just wait for them to be $20.00 and then have the 20% off sale at the same time, makes it liveable.

The problem with the 50 pack and the custom eteched buttons on the same KPL, is they have different translucent properties, so the pack looks brighter than the custom and depending on your back light setting can appear ON when next to the custom etched buttons.

Sadly I have not installed all the buttons I paid for yet a couple of years ago!
