blueman2 Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Has anyone tried using a Schlage lock without the outside keypad (replace it with a regular key only front)? WAF issue. She does not like the looks of the keypad on the front door. But I want the ability to lock/unlock by program and know it's lock status. I think mechanically I can do it, but I am not sure the z-wave will work without a keypad attached. I do not have one of the newer motorized Schlage locks (just the old CAM ones), so cannot test by myself. ????
oberkc Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I use a schlage z-wave lock that I use with the ISY-994. Mine has the keypad, however. If mine is standard, the keypad is part of the unit that includes the deadbolt and electronics. Not sure it would be of much use and doubt it can be swapped with regular key.
stusviews Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Which Schlage lock do you want to install? What would you put in place of the keypad to cover the opening?
blueman2 Posted November 14, 2015 Author Posted November 14, 2015 Which Schlage lock do you want to install? What would you put in place of the keypad to cover the opening? I want to use one of the newer Schlage locks with a motorized lock (not the CAM version which I currently have). I have read about people with Kwikset Z-wave locks replacing the outside keypad with a regular, round deadbolt key lock. Apparently the Kwikset can work without the keypad, once it has been initially programmed. But I need Schlage since all my cylinders are schlage for key purposes. So that is why I am asking if they work without the keypad once they are set up. Mechanically, I am pretty sure it will work. I am just not sure if the z-wave continues to work right once the keypad is unplugged.\ Could someone with one of the motorized Schlage locks see if their's still works (via z-wave commands from the ISY) if you pull out the connector going to the keypad?? An alternative would be to go with the Danalock BT100BC which works with any outside key deadbolt. But I do not like the design and it has some bad reviews.
stusviews Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Both the Schlage and the Kwikset locks already have a round inset that accommodates a regular key. The keypad is, basically, a rectangle. It's not possible to replace one with the other. In any case, the electronic lock requires that the keypad be connected.

Others have done what I am proposing with Kwikset, both in terms of replacing the keypad with a simple round keylock (outdoor facing parts), and in terms of running it without the Keypad plugged in. I am not sure I can link to other forums, but if you google "z-wave deadbolt without keypad" you will find a reference to a well known forum with a person saying they have done this. But it sounds like your experience is that this will not work for the Schlage. Guess my only option then is the Danalock BT100. Thanks!!

blueman2 Posted November 15, 2015 Author Posted November 15, 2015 Kwikset already has an electronic lock without a keypad: http://www.kwikset.com/products/categories/deadbolts.aspx True, but not z-wave. If this was z-wave, I might use it even if it would not fit my existing house keys. Frankly, I do not understand my wife's abhorrence of keypads on the entry door, but it just ain't worth the battle with her.
stusviews Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Luckily, my spouse loves the convenience of a keypad. But the goal of responding is for your benefit: http://www.kwikset.com/products/styles/traditional-deadbolt-with-home-connect.aspx

But the goal of responding is for your benefit: http://www.kwikset.com/products/styles/traditional-deadbolt-with-home-connect.aspx BIG thumbs up!!! I swear I looked and looked and never saw these. Worth it to have on key different than others for this. And maybe, someday, my wife will come around to allowing keypad on front door. She loves them on side door, but just hates the look of the front. And we never use the front ourselves, so no need for keypad for us. Thanks again, stusviews!!!!
blueman2 Posted November 20, 2015 Author Posted November 20, 2015 Update. I found a really inexpensive Schlage lock on ebay (BE469WK) and was able to set it up and then unplug the keypad and use a regular exterior keyed deadbolt lock on the outside. It works just fine! So you do not need to keep the keypad plugged in for it to work. Of course, you cannot unlock it from outside using keypad, but otherwise all other functions (including all z-wave functions) work as usual. Wife is happy. Therefore I must also be happy.
