milhouse Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Hi, I am trying to add an Insteon Garage Door and Status Kit but am getting the dreaded "Insteon Engine Not Found Error". I've reset several times, tried to add it to the same circuit etc., all to no avail. When adding using the automated process I do get lights on the 2450 LED and some cllicks and noises, but nothing happens in the administrative panel. When I try to add it using the Insteon address, again I get LED light and some sounds, but I get the Insteon Engine Not Found Error. I've tried in multiple outlets, including ones where other Insteon devices have no issue, and even in the same circuit with the PLM. Teken Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Is your 2412S PLM Single Band or a 2413S Dual Band PLM? Have you plugged the I/O Linc into the (same) outlet as the PLM?
milhouse Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 It is a dual band and yes - same outlet.
Techman Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Being that the IOLinc is single band chances are you've got some interference on the powerline. Are there any florescent lights or CFL's on the same circuit as the IOLinc? You may also want to try doing a factory reset on the device.
Teken Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 It is a dual band and yes - same outlet. Bring the device into the house and plug the unit into the exact same outlet as the 2413S PLM and set the Admin Console to lever 3 error logging and place it here when you try to link it again. As Techman suggested hard reset the device first than try a add an report success / failure.

The Level 3 log I posted above is this exactly - attempting to link in the same outlet after doing a factory reset... Also, no CFLs or fluorescents in the same outlet. To confrim - hard reset is holding down the set button, plugging in, and keep holding for 3 seconds?
Teken Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Have you tried both linking methods and each one fails?
jerlands Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Failed to add device, reason 3 <-- you don't have communication with the IOLinc. Are you properly setting the IOLinc into linking mode (press and hold the set button for 3-5 seconds or until the lights starts blinking) and/or are you certain you're using the correct address? Jon... Yes - holding down the button for 3 - 5 seconds (its chirps around 4 times). I've linked dozens of other devices without issue. It also is the right address - and there is some communication between the device and ISY because the IOLinc chiprs and blinks several times, but ultimately does not link. I think I am going to chalk this up to yet another crappy Insteon product. I am extremely unimpressed with their quality as I have had 3 microswitches and two hidden door sensors fail within a year.

Baring a persistent noise issue in the home I would submit a RMA to Smarthome and let them replace it under the 2 year warranty. Please do follow up with us when the new one comes in because I am rather surprised. The I/O Linc has been a long time staple product and its been a very solid item in the Insteon line up. BTW you can ask for a cross dock where they will charge your CC and ship a new one to your home. Then all you need to do is ship back the defective unit with the enclosed UPS label. This gets you up and running faster than just waiting for you to (first) ship your item then wait for the warranty item to arrive.

Try plugging the IOLinc into a different circuit in the house, then try to link it. I think you have a communications issue that's not related to the device.

I think you have a communications issue that's not related to the device. I've tried 4 different outlets, including the one the PLM is plugged into. I have over 20 other Insteon devices in the house that do not have communication issues.

I am extremely unimpressed with their quality as I have had 3 microswitches and two hidden door sensors fail within a year. I'm also rather unimpressed with the quality of Insteon devices however my take on it is dirty power (surging and fluctuations) have a direct impact on the life of the Insteon device. I don't know if using higher grade components or better design would help prevent this. Jon...
milhouse Posted December 6, 2015 Author Posted December 6, 2015 Received a replacement unit and it worked right off the bat. Thanks for everyone's help.
