arw01 Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 Trying to add a just bought 2334-232 from the Smarthome black friday/cyber monday sale. Getting the message as attached in the photo. The logs show the motion sensors getting hammered by some guests so those can be ignored. LeeG Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 (edited) I agree with jerlands that comm is marginal. Also the flood of Motion Sensor messages makes the comm more difficult. Here is what the first part of the trace should look like when adding an I2CS Keypad. The message activity in Red is missing in your trace. arw01 Posted December 13, 2015 Author Posted December 13, 2015 Thank you gentlemen. I just ran the same add device this morning with no guests and it ran perfectly with 2 hops remaining. Also going to adjust the one motion sensor to timeout instead of transmit continuously, I have to surmise that the traffic was too much with the motion sensor transmitting continuously while the guests were here. Now off to diagnose the front porch, it always turns off, just won't turn on. Changed the switch, changed the load, no difference. Won't reliably answer a query either. Will dump a filter on some items that might be before the switch and plug in my x10 meter to see what the outlet that is on the same feed as this switch says the signal is.There are multiple dual band items within a few feet.
stusviews Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 (edited) Also going to adjust the one motion sensor to timeout instead of transmit continuously, I have to surmise that the traffic was too much with the motion sensor transmitting continuously while the guests were here. The motion sensor does not transmit continuously. The motion sensor transmits momentarily (twice) each time motion is sensed if "As motion is sensed" is checked and momentarily (twice) only after the time out if "As motion is sensed" is not checked and motion continues. Changing the time out duration has no effect on that function. Will dump a filter on some items that might be before the switch and plug in my x10 meter to see what the outlet that is on the same feed as this switch says the signal is. Simply installing a filter is useless unless you have definitely shown the the item is the cause of communication difficulty. You can do that by unplugging or disconnecting the suspect item and observing the result. BTW, just turning something off is inadequate, it must be unplugged or disconnected. arw01 Posted December 14, 2015 Author Posted December 14, 2015 I have a motion sensor that would beg to differ with you, it blinks it's red light for a good 20 seconds after motion, and this switch that is giving me trouble has blink on traffic turned on. It just starting blinking for 20 seconds or so at a time, gotta wonder.. The level 3 console will show no activity while the switch is blinking. The circuit I am going to filter has the tivo on it as well, don't like to mess with the power much on those.

Normally, fast blinking indicates the MS is low on battery power, can not communicate either because of noise or a broken link to a device no longer in the network or not powered. The last fast blink is when remote programming is active. This seems to differ depending upon what firmware is in the hardware and ISY.
LeeG Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 The lack of Motion Sensor traffic in the event trace is not informative. If it is the PLM that cannot be reached the event trace would not show traffic that does not reach PLM. if the Motion Sensor is not reaching some other device (and is retrying during the 20 seconds) that traffic never shows in the event trace because that traffic is being sent to an Insteon address other than the PLM. After putting Motion Sensor into manual linking mode do a Show Device Links Table. Look for all link records with E2 01 xx.yy.zz .. .. .. where xx.yy.zz will be the Insteon devices that receive the motion messages. By checking Current State of each device with a link record it should show which device(s) are not ACKing the motion message. Could be a comm issue or the Responder device may have lost the corresponding Responder link record.pointing bac to the motion sensor.
arw01 Posted December 15, 2015 Author Posted December 15, 2015 I think it was the broken linc, at one point I had replaced a PLM and that motion sensor might not have gotten the old one removed. I factory reset it last night and re-added it, will see it it helps any. This weekend will pull the switch I just put in there, put in a box and attach right at the PLM and see if I get reliable communications or not. May have to buy that JLR bridge (if I have that name right). I have enough dual band, access points, filters etc, that I should be having no more issues period. i tossed out an on/off module the other day that even on the plm plug would not respond reliably.
