Intermittent Connections

Hi all,

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I apologize if it's not in the correct forum.

Lately I've been having intermittent outgoing connection issues with my ISY994i and I hope someone here can tell me where else to look or where the problem could be. I'm running the latest firmware 4.3.26, and everything else on the ISY has been running great. This issue just started maybe a month to a month and a half ago.

The problem is, Pushover notifications, email notifications or text notifications will work fine most of the time, then suddenly quit working for a while or work intermittently. While manually testing during a failure, sometimes they will send, other times not, then suddenly start working reliably again. I don't have any issues with my internet connection on my computers, iPhones or iPads in the house and have speeds well over 80Mb/s.

I've tried to increase and/or decrease Timeout settings in both Network Resources and Emails/Notifications. My ISY has a fixed IP address and the DNS is set to 8.8.4.4 but also tried 8.8.8.8, and Comcast's 75.75.75.75. I don't have a certificate installed and I only use MobiLinc to access the ISY with medium Security. I have tried to both raise/lower the Security, but still have the intermittent problem. I can't figure out why I would just start having this problem after running fine for at least a year.

Thanks in advance for any help

Jerlands,

I've been using yahoo mail since getting my ISY almost 2 years ago and never had a problem like this. I could see your point with sending email notifications and text messages, but I didn't think Network Resources would use yahoo mail for sending Pushover notifications. When I have the problem, all are affected. Would Network Resources also use the yahoo servers?

No.. Pushover notifications won't use yahoo mail but Issues like this are often security related, either on the receiving end or the transmitting end.  Since similar outgoing communications are commonly affected you might look at the security  you have installed on your gateway or any routers in the path.

Not sure I know what you mean by " the security you have installed on your gateway or any routers". I have a Cisco E3000 router I've had for about 2-3 years now. I also have quite a few other things on my network like web cams, 2 servers, an Echo etc. connected to the router that I can access with no problems. All worked fine up until a month or so ago. I did try different security settings on the ISY and still the same intermittent problem. Only with the ISY tho. All other devices on my network are working fine.

It seems to be an intermittent problem with the ISY connecting to the servers. I even get the red ! when the ISY fails to synchronize with the NTP server.

I just checked my router and everything seems to be ok there. I do have all my network devices assigned a fixed IP address in the router. Earlier today, I did uncheck DHCP on the ISY and entered the fixed IP address and 8.8.4.4 as the DNS server but didn't seem to make a difference.

Those were the default settings when I upgraded the firmware to 4.3.26 but still had the intermittent issue. I just lowered them last week because (per another thread here) TLS 1.2 and ALL was causing the OP's Mobilinc to take a LONG time connecting to ISY. I still have a 4S so my connection speed was pretty slow. Michel said in the thread it was ok to lower them to find a balance between Speed and Security.

By the way Jerlands, thank you so much for your time in trying to help me figure this out. I've been dealing with this frustrating issue for a while now.

I really appreciate it.

The ISY separates client and server settings in the Dashboard.

SSL server settings affect incoming connections (like the web interface and API), its strength will affect the security and performance of incoming applications, like Mobilinc.

SSL Client settings will affect outbound connections, like TLS when sending email and outbound HTTPS network resources.

If you changed the ssl client to 'All', it shouldn't affect Mobilinc at all - because they use two separate settings.

 Problem solved!

Sorry for the delay everyone. I had to reconfigure miles of cable in my computer room.

The other morning, while doing my daily routine of reading my coffee and drinking my internet, my connection suddenly froze, then watched as the lights on my modem, router, switches, and ISY all faded to black.

Turns out, the battery in the UPS that is supposed to “protect” that equipment from surges and power failures died without warning and is what has been causing my intermittent problems. I never imagined the issues I was having for at least the past month were being caused by the UPS battery failing, so apparently there are some UPS’s with design flaws.

I have 3 other USP’s from different manufacturers and can’t wait to see what surprises they have in store for me when their batteries fail!

Thanks to all that helped!

Yeah, I never knew either,  but if your internet is not working and ISY tries to Syncronize to the time server, you’ll see a red  !  to the left of “NTP Server”.
